In honor of Earth Day, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is offering a free day at all state parks on Friday, April 22. Visitors will not need to display a Discover Pass for day-use visits to state parks. The “free days” are in keeping with legislation that created the Discover Pass. The pass costs $30 for an annual pass or $10 for a one-day permit and is required for vehicle access to state recreation lands managed by Washington State Parks, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Natural Res...
The early phase of recreational spring chinook season on the lower Columbia River ended April 8, one day earlier than the Saturday deadline set in January by the two-state Columbia River Compact. The Compact agreed at its hearing April 7 to close the fishery based on projections that the catch of upriver chinook salmon will reach the initial 7,515-fish harvest guideline a day ahead of schedule. The closure also applies to steelhead and shad in the 145 mile stretch of river from Buoy 10 at the river’s mouth to Bonneville Dam to protect the m...

Chaipat "Putter" Thongkijlaohachai is a 17 year old senior exchange student at Wahkiakum High School. Putter, as everyone calls him, comes from the sprawling city of Bangkok, Thailand. He and his family live just outside the city in what might be considered a kind of suburb, Petchkasem 3. It's not as busy as the city, but it's not rural like Wahkiakum County either. The traffic is bad and most of the homes are surrounded by high walls for privacy and security. In Thailand, everybody has a...

Freshman Zach Johnston improved for the third match in a row and tied for second with a 44. It's great when two of your four scores finish first and second in a 22 player event. The Mules' aggregate score of the four best scores combined, improved again with the addition of sophomore Bryce Good's 48 and 8th grader Elijah Doiron's 57. Also posting scores for the Mules were eighth graders Tyler St....
