  • Active Rachael Wolford adapts to changes

    Apr 14, 2016

Puget Island resident Rachael Wolford decided to cap off retirement and a move to Seaside with an art show at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa this weekend. If anyone could pull it off, Wolford could. Raised with the values of the country where she was born, that's just how it was. "During World War Two, the guys were overseas," Wolford said of England. "The women were at home. You saw a problem and you took care of it. You did not look to see how to do it. There is a job to be done and you did it....

  • DNR predicts flat timber revenue for the county

    Rick Nelson|Apr 14, 2016

Wahkiakum County can expect little change in the revenue it receives from state managed timber sales over the next three years. Staff of the Department of Natural Resources, which manages the harvest of timber from county trust lands, made the report Tuesday to the county board of commissioners. The good news, they said, is that the recent sale on Bradley Mountain went for very competitive, high prices. The county should realize around $915,828 from the sale this year. The bad news, according to Commissioner Blair Brady, is that the county is...

  • County dealing with tech trouble

    Rick Nelson|Apr 14, 2016

Wahkiakum County's computer and technology programs have outgrown their welcome. Since the county set up a computer system for the courthouse offices years ago, staff in the auditor's office have been responsible for maintaining the system and handling the paperwork associated with it. No more, Auditor Diane Tischer said this week as officials met to discuss how to manage the system. "The auditor's office doesn't want to be responsible anymore," Tischer said. "It's huge--computers, telephone and copiers, someday. We won't be able to get to...

  • Jim Crow is found in Wahkiakum County

    Rick Nelson|Apr 14, 2016
    1

Scooped. That's what we are at The Eagle. Last fall, we decided to do a story about the African-American man who lived at Brookfield at the end of the 19th Century. Jim Crow Point and Jim Crow Creek were named after him; there may even be Jim Crow Hill. The lore is that there was a popular song, "Jump Jim Crow," which caricatured African Americans, and the man, Jim Saules, sang it as a way of mocking the song and Jim Crow. Jim Crow, of course, refers to laws adopted in states of the Confederacy to enforce segregation of African Americans,...

  • White Tail Run just a month away

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 14, 2016

SUPER NICE--Last Thursday was certainly a toasty one as temperatures here hit the mid-80's which is pretty rare for us this time of year! While I'm sure the sun and heat lovers liked it, it was a bit too warm for me to be outside for very long, but if you were one of those who loved it, I hope you wore sun screen! By the time the weekend was over, it was back to some clouds and a brief amount of mist in certain places, so it was more my kind of weather. I know it was much better to do yardwork in, as it was much cooler and the sun wasn't...

Historically, crime control has been the responsibility of local and state governments, with little involvement from the federal government. However, as crime became more rampant in the United States, the federal government increased its support for domestic crime control in the 1990s by creating a series of grant programs designed to assist state and local law enforcement. Byrne was one of them....

  • Study looks at salmon ocean entry

    The Columbia Basin Bulletin|Apr 14, 2016

Columbia River basin salmon and steelhead, which are from the same species, but of differing stocks, enter the river’s estuary and the ocean at different times and at different sizes, a variation that contributes to the resilience of the fish. Because these fish begin to grow rapidly when entering the ocean, the timing differences between early-arriving fish and those fish that arrive later give the early migrating fish a growth advantage, according to a recent study. That timing advantage allows early-migrating fish to reach larger sizes s...
