Olympia - More than 6,500 students, educators, and parents assembled across the capitol steps Monday to shout out their frustrations over the state's failure to fund basic education, its constitutional duty. Speakers at the Rally for Student Civil Rights and Amply Funded Public Schools referred to Dr. Martin Luther King's fight for equality. Monday was his holiday. "In honoring Martin Luther King Jr., Washington can look to his words for inspiration and a call to action," said Summer Stinson,...
By Rick Nelson With one member out of town and another ailing at home, the Wahkiakum County commissioners didn't cover too much ground at their meeting Tuesday. Commissioner Dan Cothren journeyed to Olympia for a special meeting of the Board of Natural Resources, and Commissioner Blair Brady called the courthouse to attend the meeting by phone. Commissioner Mike Backman chaired the 20-minuted meeting, and he and Brady tabled action on two items of business--hearing a claim for damages from a person whose vehicle sustained damage from fresh...
By Rick Nelson Members of the Cathlamet Town Council covered a lot of ground at their monthly meeting on Tuesday. Among many items of business, the council approved agreements with the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce, Wahkiakum County and Port District 1, and they presented a schedule for a consultant's analysis of sewer system finances. The council approved a contract with the Chamber. Council members in December had expressed concern that the list of deliverable services was too vague. Council Member Sue Cameron subsequently met with Chamber...

To The Eagle: With all the snow, ice and frozen temperatures we have been having this winter, I can't help but think of the fantastic road crew we have here in Wahkiakum County. I live on one of those town hills that might be overlooked in other large counties but here, our hard working county employees never fail to de-ice, plow and/or sand our hills. I don’t know all the names of our county or state road crew employees but I know you have been working hard, putting in a lot of extra effort to make sure we can get to work and school and I, f...

The human remains discovered on the shore of the Columbia River in Wahkiakum County last May have been identified, and the identity confirmed through DNA comparison with samples donated by relatives, Prosecutor/Coroner Dan Bigelow announced Tuesday. Because of the condition of his remains, which led authorities to initially suspect that they had been in nature for up to two years, Arneson’s cause of death remains undetermined. The S...

FREEZING COLD/WET--From the sounds of it, many folks knew it was cold, as their power bills really took a leap this past month, and they were right as it's been down to 11 degrees here! After several nights of freezing tempertures, one just gets chilled to the bone! Of course, warming up also meant rain, and even that wasn't exactly warm, so one is still having to bring on the blankets, turn on the electric blankets and even break out the hot water bottles! However, considering what I've seen in other parts of the country, we are quite fortunat...
