  • Wahkiakum land part of large scale salmon habitat restoration plan

    Pockets of land in Wahkiakum County are part of large scale state and federal plans to improve salmon habitat in the lower Columbia River Basin. The State of Washington, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Bureau of Reclamation and Bonneville Power Administration last Friday proposed an agreement that would direct $40.5 million to protect and restore estuary habitat through 2018.     Congressman Brian Baird announced last week that schools in Southwest Washington would receive more than $45 million in emergency education funding. The money has been released for education-related jobs and will maintain programs for low-income students and students with disabilities. The schools will receive $14.7 million in Title I funds and $30.4 million in IDEA (Individuals with disabilities Education Act) funds effective immediately. Manager Dave Tramblie reported the West Valley Road project crews have been working on is moving right along. They have been replacing some underground lines that have been causing problems.     The Cathlamet Town Council will consider a request to contribute $50,000 to the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic when it meets April 20. The council will hold a public hearing on the proposal at its 7 p.m. meeting in the Cathlamet Fire Hall.     Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday voted to extend the contract of Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic Manager Dr. Janice McClean another two weeks. The contract would have expired April 7; it now extends to April 21. Commissioners reported they are negotiating a new contract with Dr. McClean. Dr. McClean came to the clinic last year on a temporary basis with a goal of shoring up clinic operations and put it in a stable financial position.
