Jeff McNally, a 2006 Wahkiakum High School graduate, is playing professional football with the Wyoming Calvary of the American Indoor Football Association. McNally is finishing his senior year at Eastern Oregon University, La Grande, taking classes on line to earn a bachelor degree in business management. An all-American defensive back and four-year starter at Eastern Oregon, he and a couple teammates participated in a professional football training camp earlier this year in Arizona and demonstrated their talents for professional scouts at...

  • Fire safety program at Grange hall

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

THE LION ROARS-- We definitely had Spring and April arrive with a roar; wind, rain and power outages were the norm the last few days. It's been boots and galoshes weather rather than sleeveless dresses and cute sandals, which we all thought we'd wear for Easter! Spring sprung a leak, I believe. Let's hope some nicer weather arrives soon as these low and mid 30 degree temperatures at night are keeping the flannel sheets on much longer than expected! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 8-14 are Tim Parker, Kylie Thacker, Paul Tos...

  • Soldier returns from Afghan tour

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

For Skamokawa's Darren Droullard, the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center were a call to action. He was 35 years old, with a wife and teenage daughter. "I felt I should go," he said. "It just seemed like I should serve." Droullard tried to enlist in the regular US Army, but recruiters told him that he was too old. He tried the Washington National Guard; their age limit was 36 years; he enlisted with three months to spare. That started a career that has taken him on...

  • Grays River election draws interest

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

A small election has drawn lots of interest in the Grays River Valley. Vote-by-mail ballots will be mailed Friday to landowners in the valley for election of members of the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District Board of Directors. The district, which is essentially a flood or erosion control district, has a three-person board of commissioners, and all positions are up for election. The term has ended for the Position 1, held by Delvin Fredricksen, and the unfinished terms of two candidates who resigned from office are also up for election. P...

  • Grange News

    Krist Novoselic|Apr 8, 2010

The election for the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District is proceeding for April 27. There are three seats on the district’s board with a contested election for every position. Last week I wrote how the election used a weighted ballot system. Another unique feature is that entities which are landowners / taxpayers in the district can vote. Here are some important details about eligible voting properties that are organized into trusts. A trust needs to designate an individual who will vote on the trust’s behalf. The members of the tru...

  • Commissioners meet planning applicants

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

Wahkiakum County commissioners interviewed candidates for a vacancy on the county planning commission and acted on other business items Tuesday. The planning commission has had two vacancies representing District 1, Puget Island and part of Cathlamet, for years. Recent advertisements, however, drew four candidates. Three were Puget Island residents. Eugene Healy gave commissioners a resume describing his career in business. Loren Jennings, an engineer, and William (Bud) Condrey, a surveyor, described their work with planning and land use...

  • Commissioners boost environmental specialist position

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

Wahkiakum officials this week agreed to reinforce the county health department's environmental health specialist position. County commissioners reduced the position to one day a week in late 2008 as part of budget cuts to meet a revenue shortfall. On Tuesday, they agreed it's probably time to add more time to the position. Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright told Commissioners Blair Brady, Dan Cothren and Lisa Marsyla it's time to consider raising food permit fees and increase the health officer's hours. The fee for a small...

  • Business seminar to cover plans, budgets

    Apr 8, 2010

Local businesses are sponsoring a seminar later this month to aid other Wahkiakum County businesses and people interested in operating a business. Business Navigation 101 is an introduction to an integrated planning and budgeting approach using analysis, systems and marketing to set targets, measure progress and quickly adapt to turbulent change. Business methods formerly used by larger enterprises are now being applied to improve the stability of smaller ventures. There are many practices normally used only rarely, which may help some...

  • Who will pay to clean the river?

    Apr 8, 2010

I remember coming upon a beautiful lake in California during my travels in the early 70's and found a boat launch and a camping and picnic area. I donned my swimsuit and ran to the beach area when I was confronted by a sign that said, "No bodily contact with water." One could boat, water ski (with wet suit), canoe but not immerse oneself in the waters of that pristine lake. The powers that be considered our little bodies to be a contaminate and a major one at that. The lake was not impure--we were. When I returned to Portland, we were to go wat...

  • Vote for change or keep hoping

    Apr 8, 2010

To The Eagle: Adding to the editorial last week on the health care bill, what hasn’t died down is the utter disdain that the majority of American voters has for the bill, along with the way it was written/drafted and passed into law. That disdain will show up over the next five to eight months, and then in another two years. The only bipartisan part of the bill was in opposition to it, where a few Democrats, worried about this year’s elections, voted against it. All other Democrats drank the Obama Kool Aid! The first year of the Obama adm...

  • Vista Park's legacy has come to an end

    Apr 8, 2010

To The Eagle: I am writing this letter to express my heartache for the loss Vista Park has suffered. The park would not be what it is today if it wasn’t for Steve McClain. His dedication and integrity goes far beyond just a job. The park is an extended family to him; not to mention his devotion to the community. Steve helped to start and maintain the West Side Water, was a founding member of the Friends of Skamokawa, and is a man who wears many hats. One vivid image I have of Steve is in his rubber boots and rain gear on a Saturday morning u...

  • Utopia not a reality

    Apr 8, 2010

To The Eagle: I understand the "true" self interest of the opinion writer in The Eagle, April 1, 2010. He would like our country to become the socialist, caring, and "peaceful" utopia he learned about back in college 30 years ago. Oh, if we could only make it that more perfect way, the nation would truly prosper. I just want to suggest growing up. Realizing that chucking the Constitution and throwing away our military capabilities will only bring suffering and death to our way of life and for the other free peoples of this world. Go back to...

  • Opinion piece written in a parallel universe

    Apr 8, 2010

To The Eagle: The editorial in last week's Eagle restored my faith in a boyhood dream -- the then popular science fiction concept of parallel universes. It is refreshing to see that the concept is alive and well here in the 21st century, but it is still as much of a mind boggler as it was back in my callow youth in the dead center of last century. For instance in Eagle universe, President Jimmy Carter made us world leader in clean energy, but I missed out on that, because in my universe I was sitting in long gas lines watching stagflation...

  • Grange moves on with reorganization

    Apr 8, 2010

To The Eagle: The next move for the Elochoman Grange? Our last informational meeting brought out six interested folks, interested in possibly reorganizing the Elochoman Grange. We are having another meeting tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. to see if that interest is still there and also to see if more folks have picked up on this idea. We will meet at the hall to talk over the progress and to map out any further actions if needed. The coffee pot will be on and the cookie supply may be endless. As before, any questions needing answers before the...

  • County deserves better

    Apr 8, 2010

To The Eagle: We have been taxpayers in Wahkiakum County for 28 years and have faithfully followed this community through al of its highs and lows. We totally agree with the letter from Mr. Adam Fletcher that a great injustice was committed in your county with the release of Mr. Steve McClain. Might we suggest perhaps the way to rid your county of these abrupt and senseless actions would be to suggest the citizens to support in electing Mr. McClain to replace a presiding port commissioner? His history of selfless dedication and service to your...

  • Naselle students get inventive in competition

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

Spring? What’s going on here? Studded tires are supposed to come off on April 1 so we wake up to snow the next few days. Something’s wrong with this picture. This wasn’t the only place with bad weather for the Easter weekend, as we headed south to spend time with our family in California. It started snowing just out of Ashland, Ore. and got pretty scary in the Siskiyous. We made it through the snow, slush, wind and downright nasty stuff, just ahead of a 20-car pileup near Weed, Calif. We had a wonderful time with the family and headed home on M...
