The board approved several contracts relating to the change in the regional organizations that channel state and federal funding into mental health and related services at the local level. Dick Swart from the Town of Cathlamet was in attendance at Tuesday’s Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting. Development of a program to deposit dredge spoils on eroding county beaches continues to move slowly in the offices of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Wahkiakum County officials are working with residents of Puget Island and the Cape Horn areas to set up a 10-year program that will allow dredgers to deposit spoils on the eroding beaches. Each week residents attend meetings of the board of commissioners for updates. April is a busy month at the Community Garden. We have been pulling the overwintered weeds, cleaning pathways, rototilling the plots, filling raised beds with new soil, liming the plots, and generally sprucing up the whole garden. The raspberry plants have been pruned and tied up to their wires, weeding them is still in the process. The blueberries were weeded and fertilized thanks to the volunteers who come help out. Donald R. Greenlund passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016 after visiting with family and friends at Community Hospice in Longview, WA. He was just a few weeks from celebrating his 84th birthday. Don was born on April 16, 1932 in McMinnville, OR to Clarence M. and H. Linnea (Young) Greenlund, the 4th of five children. He attended Columbus grade school and graduated in 1950 from McMinnville High School where he participated in band, playing the clarinet. Lifelong resident of Puget Island, Helen Seaberg, born May 16, 1920 to parents Paul and Impi Lindwall, died April 1, 2016. A homemaker with many hobbies, she farmed and fished commercially with her late husband, Ed Seaberg who preceded her in death in 1991. They were married in Vancouver, Wash., in 1938. She did taxidermy and lapidary work with agates and petrified wood. The Cathhlamet Public Library is one of many libraries throughout Washington that now have Roominate toy kits available for children to try out before the kits move to the next library. Roominate is a building toy designed to appeal to girls as well as boys, ages 6 and older. “Roominate will be available to use in the library during open hours (2-5 p.m.) April 8-9, 12-14, and 19-22,” said Librarian, Carol Blix. Last Thursday, Wahkiakum High School held its only home track meet of the season. Teams from Adna, Onalaska and Pe Ell were in attendance. The Mules took first in girls' competition with 122 points and placed third in boys' competition with 36 points. The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team suffered their first loss last week in a double header with Toutle, 0-3, but they quickly turned it around and won the second game 7-3.
