The Wahkiakum County 4-H Council is getting ready for its 24th annual Great White Tail Run on May 17. The first step in the preparation is to select a logo for the run t-shirt. The council does this by holding an art contest for all county youth. They received many great entries from the schools and a winning design was chosen at the council meeting on March 18. Cattral Patterson of Skamokawa drew the winning entry this year. He will receive first prize of $10 and a t-shirt with his design. The second place winner was Cheyenne Kennedy of...

  • Timber saleis no sale

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 4, 2008

It's time for Plan B, Wahkiakum County Commissioner Dan Cothren said Tuesday. A proposed sale of county timber expected to generate around $1.2 million in revenue for county government drew no bidders when the state Department of Natural Resources put the sale up for auction last week. Cothren said he talked with DNR regional staff after the auction and asked them to come up with another plan, for the county needs the revenue for its 2009 budget. Cothren added that he wasn't suprised at the lack of bids. The timber is mixed species, and the...

  • Things I've learned - a news editor's report

    Caroline Jennings, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 4, 2008

Let me begin this "joys of farming" piece by saying I am most certainly not a farmer. I'm a city girl, raised in one of the most industrial towns in England, before moving to the decided urbanity of Seattle. My husband Loren and I moved to Puget Island to what was originally15 acres in 2006 with the idea of growing some vegetables, maybe raising a pig, having a chicken or two. That was my idea, anyway; Loren apparently had bigger plans that involved a tractor. Now we have what would be called a smallholding back home; a small farm with a...

  • Sarah Lawrence is new fair manager

    Apr 4, 2008

Wahkiakum County commissioners confirmed Tuesday the selection of Puget Island resident Sarah Lawrence as manager of the Wahkiakum County Fair. She will replace Kathleen Morgain who has held the position for one year but is leaving to take a media job based in Astoria. Bill Coons, fair board chair, said the board had five applicants for the job and found three of them well qualified. A three-person hiring committtee, Coons, Mike Howell and Mike Mouliot, unanimously recommended Lawrence, and fair board executive committee memebers agreed. A...

  • PUD works on water issues

    Sunny Manary|Apr 4, 2008

The Wahkiakum PUD board of commissioners met Tuesday to discuss energy and water issues. Manager Dave Tramblie told the board water crews are trying to replace existing crossings on Puget Island. He said the pipe being used usually does not have a casing and creates a lot of problems. He said that Bill Chamberlain and his crew had made no headway in replacement. A bid to replace the pipe, Tramblie said, did not include any prep work. Tramblie said it appears that the PUD could purchase its own boring equipment in a price range of $25-40,000. A...

  • New monthly column focuses on vulnerable adults

    Sarah Flohr|Apr 4, 2008

I am thrilled to announce a monthly column that will be dedicated to promoting awareness on the abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults in our circulation area. Foremost, I want to take a moment to thank Rick Nelson and The Wahkiakum County Eagle staff for allowing a forum for the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Vulnerable Adult Task Force. To my knowledge, this is the first column of its kind in a local newspaper. In 2007, I helped found the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Vulnerable Adult Task Force. Since that time, the Task Force has focused...
