Ashley Silva knew from a young age that she wanted to be an optometrist, and the reason why will tell you a lot about her. "In sixth grade, we dissected cow eyeballs," Silva said. "It was the coolest thing to me. I wanted to take it home." She's been fascinated ever since. In eighth grade, she did a job shadow at the local optometrist's office. She knew she was interested in the medical field, but she saw this as a good way to interact and connect with patients. It was certainly more appealing...
New York City filmmaker Mike Feurstein was back in town this week for his Don't Wait to Unmake a Bully program. He met with Wahkiakum High School students last year, and this year, he added John C. Thomas middle school students to his schedule. A mix of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Eric Hansen's classroom were having fun filming their sixth and final scene of what would be their own 90-second anti-bullying video on Friday. In the final scene, a girl is surprised to find out who...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners dealt with a variety of issues at their meeting on Tuesday. J.B Robinson of Puget Island asked about the beach nourishment effort, and wondered about the status of the right of entry permit signings. “The engineers are getting this thing kind of wrapped up,” Commissioner Dan Cothren told him. “I’ve got my list of my people I need to talk to this week.” According to Cothren, there were still three or four holdouts in the Cape Horn area, but he was uncertain...
Commissioners use bullying tactics To The Eagle: I’m writing today because I feel my words are falling on deaf ears when I speak directly to our county commissioners. I am being totally ignored by the county commissioners. For the last couple of years, we have heard of a few people living along the Columbia River that are having issues with erosion of the river bank in front of their homes. And still fewer are actually in danger of losing their homes to the river’s erosion. The commissioners were working with these individuals and ass...
To The Eagle: With new laws enacted ‘continually’ or seemingly so, it is impossible for us everyday people to know all laws. Yet that is not a legal excuse if caught breaking one law. That brings me to a law, I just learned from a friend. This friend just got a huge ticket, from a game warden, for cutting firewood, on a private river beach. Having lived along the Columbia most of my life, I had never heard of it before. Having seen people openly cutting firewood hundreds of times, and in the past having done so myself, honestly find it a lit...
To The Eagle: How does the county approve a marijuana business in a motel that could not be used for its lack of water and septic system? How does that motel qualify as a business location when it magically disappeared from the market in a supposed foreclosure where nobody was given the opportunity to purchase it and for what price? This is but one of the many properties that supposedly were sold in foreclosure sale (auctions that never happened). I personally attended a couple of these auctions that never happened. Myself and others wasted...
To The Eagle: At the March 21 county commissioners’ meeting, two retail/medical marijuana license applications were approved by a 2 to 1 vote. Approving the applications were Blair Brady and Mike Backman. Opposing the applications was Dan Cothren. The Wahkiakum County Republican Party stands united behind Dan on this issue. Our party feels we do not need more drug exposure, especially for our youth. We feel these applications are only a stepping stone to future problems. By allowing these, we are telling our children and society drug use is O...

SOGGY--As this week begins, it's a very soggy Sunday indeed. Saturday saw some breaks in the rain at least, but if you ask me, Sunday was just a good day to hunker down and stay put inside where it was nice and dry! The week looks to be fairly soggy until we possibly get a dry day on Friday, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that we can shed the rain gear and boots and soak in some sun rays as this third month of the year comes to an end; it's flying by! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 30-April 5 are Leif Carroll, Linda...

To help recoup the costs to implement the state’s water quality permitting program that protects lakes, rivers and marine waters from pollution, the Department of Ecology is proposing an increase in annual fees that industries, local governments and others pay to be covered by stormwater and wastewater discharge permits. Permits protect clean water by setting limits on how much pollution may be discharged into the environment. Permit holders also receive technical assistance from the state when pollution problems occur. The fee changes being c...
