  • Lady Mules hammer Comettes, split with Vikes

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Last Thursday, the Wahkiakum Lady Mules overcame Naselle’s four run first inning to 10-run their KM counterparts in a 14-4 six-inning victory at Cathlamet. Brieanna Olsen picked up the victory for the Lady Mules, settling down after issuing three walks and a pair of singles in the first inning to allow only two hits over the next five innings. One of those two hits was a one-out double in the third inning, but she was quickly erased when the next batter lined out to second baseman Morgan Elliott, who quickly got the ball to shortstop Tori W...

  • Comets, Vikes hammer Mules in baseball

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team's offense was a no show through the first four innings last Thursday, but the bats began to awaken in the fifth when they scored a pair of runs before the final out was recorded in the 12-2, five-inning loss to Naselle. Two days later, the Mules took to the road for Mossyrock and wound up on the wrong end of a pair of crushing defeats, falling 10-0 in the opener and 16-1 in the nightcap, both five-inning outings. Steven Doumit and Leo Onodera each went 2 for 3 with a double and a single in game two, with Doumit...

  • April is national Grange Month

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

NICE WEEKEND--I saw plenty of smiling faces and heard lots of lawn mowers as last weekend brought some much needed sun and warmth after cold temperatures and snowy conditions lingered here way too long! Let's hope we see more days like those as Spring blossoms, but I understand the outlook for most of this week is wet with some drying periods by the weekend, so we'll take what nice weather we can get I guess. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 29-April 4 are Aaliyah Montgomery, Leif Carroll, Mike Carroll, Linda McClain, Dana...

  • Students plant trees on refuge

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Gray skies and looming rain clouds did not discourage veteran teacher, Linda Wright and 32 of her fifth grade students from donning rain jackets and rubber boots for a morning of tree planting on Tuesday. Mrs. Wright’s 5th grade class has been working with the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership and has had a classroom program about native and invasive plants in our area. On Tuesday, the class took a bus to the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge to help McKenzie Miller and Samantha Johnson of L.C.E.P. plant 150 native snowberry and cedar trees. The n...

  • School district plans asbestos project

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

At their March 20 meeting, Wahkiakum School Board members dealt with preliminary work for this summer’s asbestos removal project. The district has received a $100,000 Urgent Repair Grant from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) in order to remove asbestos ceiling tiles from the Wahkiakum High School. Board members considered two bids to replace the t-grid ceiling system at the high school. Both were higher than the estimate for the project, acknowledged District Maintenance Supervisor Bob McClintock. The board a...

  • Road projects present challenges

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Wahkiakum County's slide-prone environment is presenting challenges to local officials. The dike under Steamboat Slough Road is in imminent danger of sliding into the Columbia River and flooding the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer. The federal government apparently has no money to fortify the shoreline. Covered Bridge Road experienced a shift that created a ridge across the pavement, and the county apparently doesn't have funds to stablize the hillside where the road is located over the Grays...

  • Land Trust works on Kandoll Farm plan

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Columbia Land Trust hopes to go to bid this year on a project that will address drainage and flooding issues on lowlands along Kandoll Road near Rosburg. A project completed several years ago to restore salmon habitat on land known as the Kandoll Farm also brought unintended consequences--freshets flowed over dikes but stayed as flood water because of drainage system changes, and two 12-foot culverts that replaced a tide gate have apparently increased stream flow in Seal River Slough to the point that it's eroding a dike protecting private...

  • Health department getting interim director

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Wahkiakum County should soon have a new, but temporary, director of the Health and Human Services Department. On Tuesday, county commissioners and Pacific County resident Sherri McDonald agreed in principle on a 13-week contract for her to take over reins of the department. Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow had suggested some changes in the proposed contract, and McDonald said she agreed to the changes, which involved wording and the addition of a separate contract regarding confidentiality. McDonald had a 30-year career in public health. A...

  • Deputy monitors sex offenders

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 29, 2012

Is there a registered sex offender living near you? Wahkiakum and Pacific counties have teamed to have a deputy sheriff monitoring the whereabouts of sex offenders full time. The result, Sheriff Jon Dearmore said Tuesday, is that law enforcement officers now know where offenders are living, and the scrutiny will likely dissuade offenders from moving to the area. Around 1990, the legislature created laws requiring sex offenders to register their residence with law enforcement agencies. Offenders were evaluated by the Department of Corrections in...
