The Wahkiakum Mule golf team started the 2013 season March 14 with a record setting four ball total of 159, eclipsing last year's record of 164 by five strokes. Three Rivers Christian finished second at 199, and Adna incomplete because they only had three players. The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team split a double-header with Mossyrock this past week, losing the opener 11-1 in six innings on Friday and winning game two 4-2, with four innings played Friday night and the remaining 2 ½ innings Monday evening. In the opener, Steven Doumit reached base on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning, stole third base and eventually scored the Mules’ lone run. On Friday, the Mules softball team met Mossyrock at home for a double header. Mossyrock won the first game 16-6, but the second game was called in the fourth inning due to darkness. Starting Mule pitcher Tori Wegdahl struggled to find her rhythm. Richard (Rich) Eugene Wilkins was born April 15, 1965 and passed away January 7, 2013 in Belgrade, Montana. He met Kelley Hudson in January 1988 in Babenhausen, Germany while he was serving in the U.S. Army for eight years. They married October 15, 1988 in Svendborg, Denmark. They moved back to the States in 1990 and went to Fort Riley, Kansas, until he had an honorable discharge in 1992. Wahkiakum County commissioners met with Columbia Land Trust (CLT) staff Tuesday afternoon for an update on CLT’s local land stewardship work. The workshop focused on four projects: Gorley Farm/Upper Grays River, Kandoll Farm, Upper Elochoman, and Indian Jack Slough/Nelson Creek. CLT owns approximately 1500 acres in Wahkiakum County, said CLT Stewardship Manager Ian Sinks. Columbia River Kayaking in Skamokawa is moving this month to a new location, a few hundred yards away from the shop where they have been leading kayak trips and teaching kayaking and canoeing classes since 1998. Columbia River Kayaking was founded in 2003 by Ginni Callahan and was reorganized into a member owned co-op in 2007, incorporating all the local kayak guides in Wahkiakum County into the new company. A 12-person jury found that a former Cathlamet man is a violent sexual predator who should be detained despite having completed sentences for his crime. The State of Washington brought the detention action against Darrell Kent, 60, who had been convicted of sexual assaults against children in Wahkiakum County in 1996 and 2005. Olympia this week became the battleground in commercial fishermen's efforts to stop a plan to move gillnetters off the lower Columbia River's mainstem. Last fall, Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber proposed the plan that also, among other things, gives recreational anglers priority in salmon allocations. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized county officials to begin the process of acquiring property from the defunct Skamokawa Park and Recreation District. The district commission ceased functioning several years ago. The district has title to a piece of land between Vista Park and the United Methodist Church in Skamokawa.
