NICE ONE--It was great to see the sunshine return last weekend but beings those days were accompanied by freezing temperatures at night, I hope any new plants you got anxious to put in the ground wound up making it through the nippy temperatures okay. By the time you read this however, our rainy weather is supposed to have returned, so it looks like we still have to drag those umbrellas around. Of course, with more snow falling back East, and temperatures in the teens, we are certainly happy that we aren't dealing with their temperatures and...

Cathlamet is going to be seeing a new business next door to the Eagle very soon--Cysciborg Holdings. Jerald Meiers and his wife Ladonna moved to Cathlamet last September from Bakken, North Dakota. With him comes “Steampunk Art” which is a unique, creative movement that has been growing in popularity using anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Meiers uses a pol...

OLYMPIA--House Bill 2797 and Senate Bill 6483 have a lot in common. Both increased funding for K-3 classroom construction, both had bipartisan sponsorship and both failed to reach the governor’s desk. In McCleary v. Washington, the state Supreme Court ruled the state was not sufficiently funding basic education. Earlier this year, the court ordered legislators to quicken the pace of funding to meet McCleary obligations—including K-3 class size reductions. According to the National Education Association, Washington state is fourth worst in...
Port District #2 of Wahkiakum County now has ownership of the historic gillnet boat currently stored at the fairgrounds in Skamokawa. Built at the Wilson shipyards in Astoria sometime between1913 and 1916, it was sold to Walter Jacobsen, an Astoria resident, then eventually sold to Herman Raistakka of Rosburg. In time it was stored at the Altoona Cannery and remained there till the cannery was not stable enough to support it. It was then moved to the Port District’s storage shed at Vista Park. In the last few years, it has been at the f...
“It takes a lot of practice to drink good beer,” Richard Erickson of Drop Anchor Brewery said. All that practice brought Erickson, Steve Sharp and Andy Lea to where they are now, with doors wide open to the newly constructed brewery in the marina, 10 investors behind them, and dreams of contributing to the local community before them. “We don’t expect to see a return for two or three years,” Erickson said. “We want to take everything and put it back in the brewery, but mostly we want to do...

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized the closure of Steamboat Slough Road for continued construction of the new setback dike on the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge. Poor weather last September stopped construction of the new dike before it was completed. The Columbia is eroding the existing dike under Steamboat Slough Road, and the US Army Corps of Engineers is directing the construction of the new dike set back from the shoreline. When the new dike is completed, the contractor will breach the old dike in two...

To The Eagle: In all the posturing, hyperbole, and hysteria down at the courthouse since the announcement of plans for a couple of legal pot farms on Puget Island, the recurring mantra from the prohibitionists is, “We’ll be sending the wrong message” if we allow these marijuana growing operations in the county. Well, here’s the news: The wrong message is already being sent, and you’re the ones sending it. You are telling the kids that we don’t trust them to refrain from pulling a break-and-enter job to abscond with a few plants, process ‘em, an...
To The Eagle: The board of Friends of Skamokawa would like to update the Wahkiakum community about the status of Redmen Hall. We have a building held up by posts and beams that have been there since (as far as we know) the time Redmen Hall was moved up from the Skamokawa waterfront in the late 1920's. It has held up amazingly well, but finally needs some up-dating. In addition, there are some new regulations about earthquake retrofitting for public buildings that we need to comply with for insurance and future funding concerns. While this work...
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had found my first trillium. Well, on my walk with the dogs yesterday, I hit the jackpot. There must have been 300 trilliums in one little area of our woods. They were just beautiful, and I had never seen so many, so I picked my first bouquet to enjoy in the house. The hummingbirds are back in full force and they sure are hungry little devils. They are so much fun to watch, and their colors so brilliant. Country life is the only way to go, and welcome to Spring. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for...
