  • Hosanna Musicale this Sunday, 3 p.m.

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 25, 2010

SPRING HAS SPRUNG--Our first day of Spring, March 20, sprang into action with some nice sunshine and temperatures in the high 60s in West Valley, so it was a pretty doggone nice day. We had a couple beautiful days before then, albeit with freezing temperatures in the wee hours of the morning, which dove down to 26 degrees here one night--brr! However, it seems Spring opted to spring a leak as the light rain began to fall Saturday evening and by Sunday, it was down right pouring at times; ah, truly Spring weather! I hope you didn't put off...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Mar 25, 2010

It’s only March, yet it’s time to start crafting, sewing and creating the exhibits that we enjoy during our fair. If you put your special fair items together throughout the next months, you will have more items to exhibit and not feel so rushed when August arrives. If you are new to our county, entering items in the fair is easy, doesn’t cost money, and it’s a great place to showcase your talents. This year we would like to have more sewn items in the Open Adult exhibits to display. If you are a talented seamstress we look forward to filling...

Interested residents of District 1 are invited to apply for the position by contacting Marilyn Strange in the district office. Anyone may nominate a candidate. • School board OK's fencing for old baseball field

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 25, 2010

The Wahkiakum School District board of directors last week approved a proposal to put fencing around the old high school baseball field. The high school baseball team has used the field which is adjacent to the district's elementary and middle school buildings since schools were built in Cathlamet. School officials had planned to move baseball games to new athletic fields near the high school, but poor drainage makes the new baseball field too wet, said Superintendent Bob Garrett. A softball field on the new athletic fields is drier and...

  • Ferry Wahkiakum closed as ramp fails

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 25, 2010

The ferry Wahkiakum should be running today (Thursday) as Clatsop County completes emergency repairs at the Westport ferry landing. The pontoon and loading ramp structure broke apart at mid-day last Friday. Sediment had built up under the float, and at low tide, twisting from lying on the slough bottom caused the float to break away from the ramp. Wahkiakum Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported Saturday that Clatsop County had the necessary permits for the emergency work, and Clatsop has contracted with Bergerson Construction to do the...

  • Feds show little give for ferry ramp

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 25, 2010

Federal officials are showing little willingness to give a break to the contractor who constructed the new Puget Island ferry ramp. The contractor, Bergerson Construction of Astoria, awarded a contract to build the pontoon that supports the floating end of the ramp to an Indiana company, and that firm hired a company that built the ramp in Mexico and incorporated Mexican-made steel in the structure. That violated federal law prohibiting the use of foreign-made steel in construction projects which used federal grant funds. Bergerson officials...

Each member county has two representatives, an elected official and a citizen. • We need to watch out for each other

    Mar 25, 2010

To The Eagle: Last week, I had my purse stolen from the Cathlamet Market parking lot. I have since discovered that I am not the only one dealing with this type of theft. I ask for everyone to be on the lookout for items that might have been discarded from a handbag. Most of these things are important only to the person who lost them. They can be left at the Sheriff's Office which is open 24/7. These are desperate times for some folks and we need to watch out for each other especially to keep our wonderful little part of the world safe. Becky...

  • McClain was integral to Vista Park

    Mar 25, 2010

To The Eagle: The 14 year old boy looked up from his mowing at the rumble of four large campers making their way toward the park office. As he killed the engine on the mower to dump the clippings, he heard boisterous greetings, those usually reserved for good friends and family not seen in awhile, echoing in the distance. The park manager asked one camper if the knee he hurt last spring is feeling any better, to which the camper replied, “It's fine after three cocktails.” Laughter fills the air between inquiries into how the daughter’s softb...

  • Help needed to find stolen tractor

    Mar 25, 2010

To The Eagle: Sometime in February while Bill May was away from his residence at 1085 W. SR 4, several of his possessions were stolen. A Kubota Tractor with bucket and tiller was included in the stolen items. Bill was required to be away from his property for an extended period while undergoing dialysis and other medical treatment. The sheriff's office has a bill of sale showing that in 2003 Bill May paid $6,000 for the Kubota and attachments. So if you, or someone you know, has recently been sold a Kubota, VIN # B6001-27392, it was stolen...

To The Eagle: Thank you for all your support over the last two years. Fulfilling the role of fair manager is not an easy task but I am thankful to have had the opportunity and feel lucky to be part of this community. As many of you know my husband Paul has been my number one supporter, volunteering his time and energy to restoring the fairgrounds. His dedication and generosity has been invaluable and I wish to thank him and all of the fair volunteers who helped during my time as the fair manager. Many local businesses and non-profit groups...

  • Financial questions need to be asked

    Mar 25, 2010

To The Eagle: Perhaps most people have spent very little time pondering the question "Who creates our money?" Someone does, you know. Nor have many people bothered to ask "How is our money created?" Since it is a man-made thing there have to be methods or techniques that are used. Very few people have found the answers to these questions. Why aren't the answers to these questions common knowledge? Shouldn't everyone know how our money is created and who creates it? If you or I ask these people who create it they will have an answer for us, but...

  • Crab feed a huge success

    Mar 25, 2010

To The Eagle: On behalf of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce, I would like to express our gratitude to all who helped make the recent Crab and Oyster Feed another big success. The profits will be used to help continue funding our annual fireworks show, the Bald Eagle Fest, the Christmas Lights, the Neewollah celebration, the beautification of downtown and a local scholarship program. A hearty thank you goes to everyone who worked on this project. To name everyone by name is not possible but our hats are off to all of the businesses who...
