  • Fire claims home, woman's pet dogs

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 5, 2015

In the early hours on Sunday morning, February 1, the siren on Puget Island was activated. Soon it seemed the wailing of every emergency vehicle in the county had taken its place. Betty Brown's home, just before the ferry landing, was on fire. Brown woke slowly despite the persistent barks of a service dog named Sparky and the repeat of the smoke alarm. She wandered down the hallway to discover a fire at her kitchen table. "I tried to put it out," Brown said, "but it just got bigger." Brown ran...

The Toutle Lake Ducks on Thursday outscored the Wahkiakum Lady Mules 15-0 in the last four minutes to win a 46-36 ballgame and claim the Central League girls championship. Toutle Lake jumped to a 9-0 start, but the Mules came back with good defense and hot shooting to lead 24-15 at halftime. The Duck defense took control in the second half. See the February 12 edition of The Eagle for a full report....

The ferry "Wahkiakum" may return to service at 10 a.m. Thursday, Wahkiakum Public Works Director Pete Ringen announced late Wednesday afternoon. Assistant County Engineer Joel Booth visited the ramp replacement site at Westport and reported, "that although the ramp is in place over there in the temporary location, apparently a few more things need to be done for the access to the ramp to be considered safe for public travel to the ramp," Ringen said. "I feel it is OK to go ahead and get the word out that we are tentatively planning to operate...

    Rick Nelson|Feb 5, 2015

The Wahkiakum Lady Mules rolled over South Bend for a 67-27 win in the opening round of the Southwest District 2B girls basketball tournament. South Bend couldn't handle the Mules' defense and ball handling. The Mules shot to a 25-9 first quarter lead. Action slowed in the second quarter as both coaches started substituting freely, and the Mules led 39-15 at halftime. With a 60-19 lead at the end of the third quarter, the running clock started to end the game quickly. The Mules will play the...

  • Setback dike work to finish this year

    Rick Nelson|Feb 5, 2015

Work on the Steamboat Slough Road dike and wetland habitat construction should be completed this year, officials from the US Army Corps of Engineers and US Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday. Officials from the Corps and Fish and Wildlife Service requested a meeting with the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners to discuss the project's progress. Last year, a contractor accomplished the major parts of the job--building a new dike set back from the eroding Steamboat Slough Road dike and creating a new wetland connected to the Columbia by...

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 5, 2015

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners used the open discussion period to discuss the pros and cons of adopting the Renewable Energy Cost Recovery Program offered in the state of Washington. “The State of Washington’s program allows utilities to pay our customers for renewable energy production,” General Manager Dave Tramblie said. “It’s up to each utility to decide if they want to participate or not.” Tramblie said the focus of this particular program is on solar power. • Climate control grips legislature

Cooper Inveen, Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, Olympia News Bureau|Feb 5, 2015

After two days of hearings that drew hundreds to the state capitol, Gov. Jay Inslee’s carbon reduction proposal has the full attention of Washington lawmakers. In an effort to curb climate change while raising money for transportation and education, Inslee is proposing a statewide cap on carbon emissions that would require polluters to buy credits to continue polluting at today’s levels. Carbon prices would start at $12 a ton and would bring in an estimated $1 billion in the program’s first year. The main idea behind cap-and-trade marke...

  • Donations sought for children's theater

    Feb 5, 2015

To The Eagle: My name is Shawn Deal and I need your help. At this moment there is to be no Missoula Childrens Theatre coming to our school district this year. Unfortunately, the funding for this wonderful program does not exist for this year. Hopefully, this is only a one year problem. For the past 20 years, The Missoula Children’s Theatre has given our school district a much needed drama program. Not only have they put on a play in the course of a week, they also come in to teach classes at the grade and middle schools. I have had the p...

  • Condescension of previous letter writer addressed

    Feb 5, 2015

To the Eagle: Poul Toftemark deserves extra high marks for his literary efforts in these pages two weeks ago. Not only did he treat us to some wry and incisive observations on the frustrations of dealing with our Olympian overseers, but he also provoked a piece of equally entertaining vainglorious puffery in response. In answer to Paul's comment that the State Auditor requires a "lengthy full report," the auditor's DDT (Deputy Director of Talking) asserts that he is incorrect -- it is a requirement of those nasty old legislators in RCW...

  • Confusion cleared up about community center name

    Feb 5, 2015

To The Eagle: Apparently there’s been some confusion on two points regarding the Community Center in Cathlamet. And apparently I’ve contributed to that confusion. I’m sorry, and I’d like to set the record straight. First problem: Is this facility properly called the “senior” center, or is it the “community” center? Or are there two separate facilities? Answer: It’s all one place, and it is the Community Center. The confusion stems from our morning schedule, which we have called the “senior center,” to differentiate these activities from our a...

  • Shakespeare group at perform at WHS

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 5, 2015

In March, students at Wahkiakum High School will get to experience “The Theatre” when the Seattle Shakespeare Company comes to town. Most of the cost has been covered by a scholarship, but the school still needs to raise $500 as well as provide lodging and meals. “The goal of the Seattle Shakespeare Company is to bring classical theater to rural areas,” said Wahkiakum High School Principal Stephanie Leitz. “The kids are excited. Our English teacher, Audrey Petterson, believes in the importanc...

It was also perfect for those who stood in line waiting for the doors to open of Rosburg Hall where the folks who were hungry for crab and oysters were treated to another delicious feast. The oysters were just the right size and for the most part, were easy to open, and when you topped off the meal with a little dessert, well, it was a fantastic meal! Travelers on SR 4 or wanting to use the Wahkiakum County ferry faced delays and closures this week. The Washington State Department of Transportation closed the eastbound lane of SR 4 near Stella to replace planks on a bridge supporting the traffic lane. The department said it has been monitoring the aging structure for several years, and analysis from a recent inspection shows significant acceleration of the deterioration of the timber bridge deck on a short section of this bridge. Meanwhile ferry service was halted Monday so that a...
