    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

BRRR--As I begin this column, we've got snow mixed with rain and temps in the 30s so it's definitely much colder than the end of last week. At least when we see snow falling, we know it's cold and don't get fooled into thinking it's nicer than it really is. As I wrap up this week's column, the snow is really coming down but with a little luck, by the time you read this, the snow will be over and done with for the year! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 15-21 are Connie Bassi, Lucy Bosch, Randy Hoven, Pat Kehrli, Carol...

  • Port 1 considers buoys, marina user concerns

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

Port District 1 commissioners discussed navigational buoys and marina user concerns at their March 8 meeting. Puget Island commercial fisherman Mike Backman told the commissioners he had talked with some fishermen who don’t care for Freshwater News, a publication available to read in the marina office, because they feel it represents an anti-commercial fishing viewpoint. He suggested subscribing to the Columbia River Gillnetter and displaying both publications. Port Manager Jackie Lea explained that the port does receive a copy of the G...

  • Couples portrayed in Inlaws & Outlaws

    Mar 15, 2012

On March 27, the award-winning documentary Inlaws & Outlaws, a collection of true stories about love and marriage, will be shown at the Kelso Theater Pub, 214 S Pacific, Kelso. With Washington’s legislature just passing a bill to expand marriage equality to all couples, straight or gay, and a ballot measure proposed to overturn the legislation, sponsors thought this would be a good opportunity for the community to meet some couples, gay and straight, and see what their relationships meant to them. The film’s director and producer, Drew Eme...

  • County delays vote on loan for PUD

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

Wahkiakum County commissioners this week delayed acting on a resolution to loan Wahkiakum PUD $1.2 million from the county treasurer's investment fund. Wahkiakum PUD has requested the loan to help finance construction of a new $3 million substation at Cathlamet. PUD Manager David Tramblie has said that the PUD has $1.8 million in reserves, so it needs another $1.2 million to complete the project. The treasurer's investment portolio includes reserves from Wahkiakum County, the PUD, Wahkiakum School District, port districts and small taxing...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

The Cathlamet Town Council held a special meeting last Friday and affirmed the selection of an architectural firm to design the remodeling of the old town hall and library. Mayor George Wehrfritz said a committee composed of librarians and library board members evaluated the seven firms that responded to a request for qualifications to design the project. The committee recommended Chesshir Architecture PC of Portland. The firm, Wehrfritz said, has much experience with renovating old buildings in Portland, and that was a major factor in the...

Commissioner Dan Cothren asked the board for tentative approval to hire a consultant to evaluate and update a study done by the US Fish and Wildlife Service about critical habitat for marbled...

  • State patrol gives thanks for compassion

    Mar 15, 2012

To The Eagle: The Washington State Patrol would like to thank all the wonderful people of Washington who showed their compassion and care following the tragic death Trooper Tony Radulescu. When we in law enforcement lose one of our own, the outpouring of support from Washingtonians is a big factor in easing a very difficult time, and helping with the healing process that follows. We find real comfort in a community that cares, and I can assure you, so do the family and friends of the fallen officer. So on behalf of all of us who work to...

  • Considering impact of a megaquake

    Mar 15, 2012

To The Eagle: It is heartening to read that county officials are taking seriously the impact a magnitude 9 earthquake will have in Wahkiakum County. While it is true that the risk of tsunami related problems here is low, we shouldn't be lulled into a sense of false security. In fact, geologists have determined that we are right on the edge of the zone of highest severity for the earthquake itself. So when we talk about bridge approaches being destroyed, we are talking about the Puget Island and Elochoman River bridges. We can also expect the...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Mar 15, 2012

It was time to fall a few more dangerous trees in the Fairgrounds Park. Commissioner Dan Cothren is falling those old leaning trees for us. They are big and some of them are growing in groups of many trees in a small area. Not a problem for Dan, he is an experienced timber faller. The plan was to get those trees cut down and cut up into firewood before the leaves start forming on the branches. We had a big volunteer crew cleaning up the branches and cutting up firewood last week-end. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the fairgrounds and...

  • PUD energy audit to provide information

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 15, 2012

We’ve had just about everything imaginable this week, weather-wise. Lake Fred (our hayfield) is up, with ice around the edge and snow covering the rest of the field. The ducks are swimming around like it’s a normal routine for them. The smelt must be coming in to the Grays River just west of Duffy’s Tavern, as I have counted as many as 22 bald eagles in the trees overlooking the river. The sea gulls are pretty happy in Gudmundsen’s field as well. News from Naselle: Sports scheduled for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School this week include...
