NICE/THEN WET-- Last week we had a few super sunny days after the morning fog went away here in Skamokawa. I heard lawn mowers going and saws running and hammering going on. Only part of the weekend was good though, as the rain moved in Saturday night and it was a pretty soggy Sunday. My daffodils are just about ready to bloom so I'm hoping that the warmer temperatures make those buds pop open. Unfortunately, it seems like they no sooner bloom and we either have heavy rains that pound them to ground, or a late frost that has them drooping. I’ll...

Master Gardeners are a small group of dedicated volunteers trained under the auspices of Washington State University. To meet the requirements to qualify as a master gardener, participants must complete the WSU training and then provide community service in the area of home gardening. Our goal is to assist home gardeners in their efforts to achieve the pride and satisfaction of growing beautiful flowers and healthful tasty vegetables and fruits. Master Gardeners have been available at the Plant and Insect booth at the local Two Islands Farm...
The trial of a man alleged to be a sexually violent predator has taken over the Wahkiakum County courthouse. Darrell Lamar Kent has served his sentence on sex crime charges, and the State of Washington is asking the Superior Court to sign a civil commitment placing Kent in continued custody until he might be considered safe to return to society. Cowlitz County Judge Marilyn Haan is presiding over the trial, and for security reasons, has ordered the closure of all but one of the entrances to the courthouse. People coming to the courthouse must p...
Wahkiakum Port District #1 commissioners met March 6 for further conversation with the partners of the Drop Anchor Brewery. Richard Erickson, Steve Sharp, and Andy Lea attended the meeting representing the brewery. Lea explained to the commissioners that his group was looking for a 24 by 48 foot building with four walls, a roof, a floor, and a restroom. The brewery would take care of wiring, lights, and the rest, he said. “This is pretty much an industrial building. It won’t be open to the public except for certain hours and certain days of the...
Successfully growing heat-loving tomatoes can be a challenge in our cool climate. Your chances of harvesting ripe, red tomatoes before summer’s end can be enhanced if you plan ahead and use some or all of the tips that are covered in this article. First, and most important, is to choose a cultivar (variety) that matures fast. This is true not only for tomatoes but all vegetables you plant because our growing season is much shorter than locales to the south. When you go to buy a seedling or seed packet, look to see the number of days until h...
Standing in front of a mass of tangled grape vine and wondering what to do with it can be a scary experience for the novice or even for the more experienced pruner. Keep in mind two essential ideas: --Don’t be afraid to cut. When you finish, about 90% of last year’s growth will be cut. --Grape plants are vigorous, and forgiving. Even if you make a mistake, you’ll get a chance to fix it next year. With that said, you can approach your pruning in a spirit of learning and adventure, not panic. Grapes are best pruned in spring (Febr...
As I write this article, the wind is blowing and there is a threat of snow. Winter has a tight rein over Wahkiakum County this early spring, for sure! Rob and I try to take a daily walk, a 2 mile stroll, really, on Puget Island. It's a really pleasant place to walk; we are outraged if we see more than 5 cars. And most of those cars are driven by people we know so we wave and smile and sometimes have a chat. As we walk we can see the subtle changes occurring as the daylight lengthens and warmer weather approaches. We see the horses in the field,...
The Wahkiakum Community Garden is located in Erickson Park in Cathlamet. Members of the public may register for plots and grow their own produce in a secured garden. Linda Hartung, 2013 community garden manager, will soon hold open registration for plots. She is scheduled to be at the St. James Family Center Safety Fair on March 23, and she’ll take registrations March 25 when WSU Extension does a cooking demonstration at the garden. Master Gardeners will also show how to plant vegetables. People planning to use their plots must be started no l...

To The Eagle: While I realize that coming from Houston might incline James Reed to shoot from the hip (“Town needs care in entering contracts” / March 7, 2013), now that he has settled in Cathlamet it might behoove him to get his facts straight before ‘firing off’ a letter To The Eagle. After scourging the Town Council for a contract that they haven’t even entered into, Mr. Reed goes on to lecture us on how a contract should be constructed to be in the best public interest. Unfortunately, town attorney Heidi Heywood is still drafting a land le...
To The Eagle: I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the partners of Drop Anchor Brewery and encourage Port District No. 1 and the community to support the proposed brewery at the marina. Mr. Erickson and his team, if successful, will be laying the foundation for further economic development in our community. In 1965, as a teenager, I had the good fortune to witness the construction of a distillery in Plainfield, Illinois. The company, in 1965, was known as the Distillers Company Limited. Today it is known as Diageo. You can...
