  • Wear green on Wednesday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 11, 2010

GREAT START--As this work week begins, it's absolutely gorgeous after a frozen morning in West Valley. But wait! It was very nice, right up until the wind began to blow and blow hard, and the black clouds rolled in and then it was hailing and snowing and raining and well, it just got nasty! It looks like we could have some cold temperatures and more chances of some freaky weather this week, so I guess winter isn't over just yet. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 11-17 are Paul Ehrensberger, Kelly Zink, Larry Bonds, Gretchen M...

The department recently awarded a contract to Granite Construction Company of Bellingham, who bid $109,806 for the project. The contractor will remove loose rock, unstable soil, trees and other debris from this slope. His first big project this year is to get rid of the standing water by the front of the arena. County Building and Planning Manager Chuck Beyer and Neil have been consulting back and forth to finalize the project plan. Last weekend Neil and his son Jeff used a backhoe to start digging through rocks and dirt to make a ditch. They will be installing pipe into the ditch...

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 11, 2010

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners discussed a proposed project to bring treated solid waste to western Wahkiakum County and other topics at their meeting on March 2. Commissioner Esther Gregg reported that a recent legal notice published in the Wahkiakum County Eagle on February 18 had generated calls to her home from concerned residents. Evergreen Septic of Long Beach has submitted a proposal to the Department of Ecology to dump treated solid waste at a site along Covered Bridge Road in Grays River. People had expressed concerns to Gregg about...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 11, 2010

Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County may get access to county funds to completed facility installation at Svensen Park on Puget Island. The port completed basic work at the park last year, installing a boat launch and dock. However, restrooms and playground equipment haven't been installed, and port representatives on Tuesday asked county commissioners to provide funding to help the port complete that work. Under original plans, volunteers were going to construct the restrooms. The site has a drainfield, water lines and other utilities...

She asked if the commissioners would write letters supporting the projects and grant applications. Ammer said that without county commission support, she wouldn't pursure the funding grants. • Why no local support for port manager?

    Mar 11, 2010

To The Eagle: This letter is in regards to the Port 2 Commissioners' firing of Steve McClain. We thought The Eagle would have been flooded with letters, from Steve's local friends, and supporters. As it was, there were only several letters from out-of-town people that gave Steve the kudos he deserves, for the excellent above and beyond job, he has done for 28 and a half years, as port manager. It's beyond us why the Port Commissioners didn't have the decency or respect, to give Steve, his family, and the public a reason for his firing. We've...

  • Vicious dog attack serves as warning

    Mar 11, 2010

To The Eagle: We would like to make our neighbors on Morgan Drive and Greenwood Road aware that on Friday night, the 12th, Buzz started to take our miniature Dachshund for a walk. He did not get the door closed behind him when our dog was attacked by a black and white dog that appeared to be at least part pit bull. Thank God our daughter and son-in-law were there. It took all four of us to get her away from the other dog but she was hurt badly and required a trip to the vet. We do not feel safe taking the dog for a walk now. The next time, it...

  • Port commission should walk a mile in fired manager's shoes

    Mar 11, 2010

To The Eagle: What a shock to read the headlines recently in The Eagle that Steve McClain had been fired! Apparently, according to the port sources I called, the port manager serves at the pleasure of the port commission and if "they" need to terminate their relationship with the manager, they may without warning! This gives enormous power to the publicly elected, three-man commission in control of this position. I hope the commission fully understands what this position entails--it can be far too easy to "manage" but not "know" the...

  • Massive project looks outside for workforce

    Mar 11, 2010

To The Eagle: A $200 million Export Grain Terminal (EGT) in a “public private partnership” is being built at the Port of Longview by TE Ibberson. This should have brought relief to an already economically depressed SW Washington, but the latest Daily News article cites unemployment in Cowlitz is up .03 percent. Perhaps if our new “partner” had hired locally instead of bringing a private workforce from all over North America (except Canada) our unemployment numbers would have leveled off during this period. The Port of Longview and the Cowlitz...

  • Island of money can't solve debt problem

    Mar 11, 2010

To The Eagle: Most people have difficulty visualizing the size of the national debt. As of today, it stands at 12.56 trillion dollars. Lately I have been trying to think of some way to illustrate that number in a way that local folks might be able to relate to. I thought perhaps most of us can visualize how big Puget Island is. There are places on the mainland that offer a vantage point for a pretty good view. Suppose we placed eight $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes on every square foot of Puget Island, including Little Island. That would be...

  • Community Library now open Mon-Sat

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 11, 2010

It’s certainly hard to figure out what Mother Nature has been trying to tell us for the last week or so. One day we have shirtsleeve weather and the next is snow flurries, lightning, thunder, hail, wind and long underwear. It looks like a not so nice forecast for the next few days. News from Naselle: It looks like Barb Swanson’s music class had a rare treat on February 26. Local musician, Wilho Saari brought his 16 string Kantele to introduce to the Elementary Music students. He played familiar melodies for them and allowed the students to ask...
