    Elizabeth Austen has spent a portion of her two year term as the Poet Laureate for Washington state visiting every county. Last Friday, she stopped in Cathlamet to meet with students in Audrey Petterson's English class at Wahkiakum High School and spend an hour with local residents at the Cathlamet Library.     The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team is going to the State 2B Tournament in Spokane for the first time since 2010 after a 54-38 win against Ilwaco last weekend. The two teams met for the first time on Saturday in a loser out regional game in Chehalis at W.F. West High School. They spent the first eight minutes getting a feel for each other, and ended the first quarter tied 11-11.     Leroy E. “Roy” Beard 85, of Cathlamet died on February 26, 2015 at home. He was born in Sandy, Ore., on June 24, 1929. He grew up in the Elochoman Valley where he came to live as a child. He joined the Navy during WWII and when he returned he married Lena “Sunnie” Miller in 1949. They lived in Cathlamet and Gold Beac,h Ore., before coming back to Cathlamet to stay. Roy worked in sawmills prior to owning his own shake mill in the Elochoman Valley. In 2001 he retired and he and Sunnie enjoyed traveling and selling the beautiful Indian Artwork...

    Neck and neck most of the game with the occasional deficit, the Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team finally pulled ahead in the fourth quarter to beat Mabton in the first round of the State 2B tournament in Spokane, 68-58. The Mules next play LaConner who outlasted Toutle Lake in the quarterfinals at 9 p.m. in the Spokane Arena. It was a team performance with several players scoring in the double digits.     The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team reached deep into their hearts in the fourth quarter to turn what looked like a lost game against LaConner into a chance for extra minutes and the win, 59-51 in overtime, in the semifinals of the State 2B basketball tournament on Friday night.     The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team met the number one ranked Okanogan Bulldogs (26-0) on Saturday in the State 2B Championship game at the Spokane Arena and lost, 59-52. The Bulldogs set the pace with three quick three pointers to start the game and though the Mules fought hard to stay in the game, they were never able to get hot offensively and trailed Okanogan for most of the 32 minutes.
