The determination of when ferry service will resume is a day by day, hour by hour determination. Five US Coast Guard personnel spent three hours inspecting the new ferry, the Oscar B., on Tuesday. "The good news is that vessel Oscar B. passed inspection, and in other respects is good to go," reported Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Pete Ringen. However, the Oscar B. is not yet cleared for carriage of passengers, Ringen said, because of issues with the Westport, Ore., ramp. "The Coast...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday discussed immunizations and handled other business from the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Sarah Present, the county health officer, said she's supporting House Bill 2009 which would end some of the exemptions people may claim to avoid vaccinating children. The rate applies to children entering kindergarten, and it means that parents have declined at least one of several required vaccinations...

To The Eagle: We want to thank the Wahkiakum County Planning Commission for standing with the community in their February 26 vote to reject the Port of Longview's proposal to dispose dredge material inside the dike of East Sunny Sands Road. The proposal was vague in long term management while wanting to begin in September. But the most important failure in the proposal is that it would by-pass the necessary replenishment of sands onto the beaches of Puget Island. This was the community's vital...

A notice would be created by the state’s Office of Crime Victims Advocacy with input from businesses and anti-trafficking advocacy groups. Costs of printing and distributing the notices to businesses, under Senate Bill 5883, wou...

OLYMPIA—State and local agencies may charge a processing fee for public records sought for commercial purposes, under terms of a proposal considered by the 2015 Legislature. Critics, however, say the change would adversely affect records requests made by citizens for non–commercial use. The issue is likely dead for this session as it failed to gain House Appropriations Committee approval by the Feb. 28 cut-off date for bill advancement. It may resurface later when the Legislature begins dealing with budget details. Under the state’s Publi...
