On September 26, an art project started by Wahkiakum High School students in Sue Garn's art class in the spring was completed with an installation at the highway entrance to the school. The whole project was an act of collaboration, not only between students learning and implementing different skills in different classes, but a collaboration between students and two generous businesses from Longview. The idea started small. One day while watching her students work on an assignment last spring,...
Wahkiakum County commissioners recognized the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and handled other business when they met Tuesday. Susan Schillios, director of the Charlotte House Domestic Violence Shelter, asked the board to approve a proclamation to observe the month. The Charlotte House has had a busy year, she said. The program has housed 13 women and 11 children for 343 adult bed nights and 363 children's bed nights. After a report from General Manager Dave Tramblie, the preliminary budget for 2018 became the primary focus at the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday. Two rate hikes were proposed with the new budget, but only one was met with enthusiasm. Auditor Erin Wilson said that she and Tramblie were proposing a $5 raise to the base fee for electric customers. “I really rationalize that on the perspective that even if you don’t use any water, or you don’t use any electri...
Last week, miscommunication among the staff led to some pictures being identified incorrectly. In a picture in the Vista Park Kite Festival story, a person who should have been identified as Sue Zabel was incorrectly identified as Jessica Schiek. In a story about Mule volleyball, a picture of Grayci Thomas was misidentified as Nai'a Freeman....
Unusually warm ocean conditions off the Pacific Northwest in the last few years led anchovies, sardines and hake to begin spawning in Northwest waters much earlier in the year and, for anchovy, longer than biologists have ever recorded before, new research has found. The rapid northerly shifts in spawning may offer a preview of future conditions if ocean warming continues, according to the new study published in Global Change Biology by scientists from the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, Oregon State University and NOAA Fisheries'...
To the Eagle: Not sure where to start but why not with this. 59 dead, over 500 wounded from the horrific slaughter in Las Vegas yet we're told by Ms. Huckabee-Sanders that, "This isn't the time to talk about gun control." This cognizant gem comes a day or so after our illustrious Attorney General is seen in Seattle whining about marijuana. Please, would someone tell me I'm just in a weird dream rather than the America I proudly served as a United States Marine? A side note: Freedom Market is now open in our highly advanced rural community...

NOT TOO BAD--We had a couple of very warm days last week, as it was up in the mid-80s, which isn't too shabby for the end of September, but as of last weekend, it looked like we were back into a little more fall-like weather, with sun one minute and rain the next. We started this work week with lots of fog and temperatures in the 40's, so things are definitely cooling down. This week's forecast isn't looking too bad, so here's to a decent weekend so that all the people holding big events, and those attending them, can enjoy their events...
