  • Nice weather is time to get winter ready

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 4, 2012

STILL NICE--It's hard to believe that we're into October already and we're still experiencing sunny skies and just gorgeous weather, rather than the rain that most of us expect this time of year. If you haven't gotten those outdoor chores done yet, well, you sure can't use the weather as an excuse except to say that you were too busy having fun in the sun to do all that winter prep work, and who could blame you? We don't often get long dry stretches like this during these Fall months, so it's hard to buckle down and think about nasty weather...

  • PUD discuss water system fee waiver

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 4, 2012

A fallen tree and financial matters occupied Wahkiakum PUD commissioners at their October 2 meeting. A hemlock tree fell and blocked both lanes of traffic at Milepost 28 of SR 4 near Skamokawa on Monday afternoon. “It didn’t break the wires, just took everything to the ground,” said Line Crew Foreman Shane Pfenniger. A motorist attempted to remove the tree. “He had no way of knowing if the line was live or not. He took a real chance,” warned Manager Dave Tramblie. The commissioners approved two change orders and an additional expense for the e...

  • Oasis Tavern reopens in Skamokawa

Christy Douglas Green, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 4, 2012

The Oasis Tavern in Skamokawa has been a local watering hole since the early 1930’s, but it has new owners who have remodeled and reopened the tavern. Cathlamet residents Rick and Eileen Tietje purchased the Oasis in March. Prior to moving to Wahkiakum County, the couple had lived in Phoenix and Seattle. “We wanted to move out of the city because of the traffic,” Rick Tieje said. Tieje is retired from the construction industry. His wife, Eileen, had formerly been a nurse. When asked why they bought the Oasis, Eileen Tietje commented that, “Rick...

"The stats have made me the town's longest serving public works/sewer/water guy," he said in an interview on Monday. Of course, things have changed in that...

  • Counties oppose Kitzhaber plan

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 4, 2012

Commissioners from Wahkiakum County, Washington, and Columbia and Clatsop counties, Oregon, have agreed to voice opposition to efforts in Oregon to move gillnets out of the mainstem of the Columbia River. A coalition of sport fishing interests started a petition drive last winter to put a measure on the Oregon ballot to end gillnetting in Oregon. And in August, Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber ordered his Fish and Wildlife Department to prepare rules that would move gillnets to side channels and bays, called select areas, which have releases of p...

  • Chamber seeks summit on sewer, water rates

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 4, 2012

Will local governmental bodies get together to create a plan to extend Cathlamet's water and sewer systems to areas not yet connected? They may do so, but probably not at least until after the November 6 election. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce has raised the issue by asking the town council and board of county commissioners to hold a "sewer summit" to discuss what can be done to expand town sewer and water systems and thereby spread operating costs over a larger group of ratepayers. The Chamber's board of directors recently generated a...

  • Repeating mistakes will not fix them

    Oct 4, 2012

To The Eagle: One of the definitions of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, despite the fact that it doesn't work. Here are a few things that don't work: Solar and wind power don't work as sources for the electric grid because they only produce power for short unpredictable periods of time, and the power must be used when it is generated. It is also prohibitively expensive unless subsidized by government, which is already running out of money. Light rail doesn't work because it only goes where the rails go, not where people want to...
