What happens when you put together four quarters of high quality basketball game after game? For the Wahkiakum Lady Mules, it meant winning the SW Washington District 2B Basketball Tournament last week. They took on Pacific League champion NW Christian Navigators last Saturday and demolished them 58-44. It was the Mule girls' first district...
DECENT BEGINNING--As this week begins, the weather was pretty decent, some dry spells and sunshine; a nice relief from some nasty, wet days last week, except for Thursday morning, which was gorgeous. By that evening, the rains came and so did the wind. Wow, it sounded like a freight train coming down the valley about 11:05 p.m., but luckily each burst of wind didn't last long and by midnight, it was just breezy. Most people I talked to missed the whole thing as they were all sound asleep, but this night owl was one of those who thought we were...

Wahkiakum County commissioners hope to get to the bottom of a debate over dates: Does the contract with the ferry crew's union expire March 31, 2010, or March 31, 2011? Commissioner Blair Brady reported Tuesday that the union negotiator makes the case that the contract expires March 31, 2011. The contract was signed March 31, 2008, and it contains a table showing wage adjustments for a three-year period. The negotiator, Brady said, claims that any references to March 31, 2010, are incorrect and stem from use of a new version of computer...
Work on the new Puget Island ferry ramp is nearly finished, but the contractor and county officials have a long way to go to resolve a violation of grant funding conditions. Officials in the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are threatening to pull funding after learning that a sub-contractor used Mexican steel in the project. County officials have been seeking a waiver or other solution that would keep funding intact and not severely penalize the contractor, Bergerson Construction of Astoria. So far, that solution remains elusive,...

The 105 year old Grays River Covered Bridge’s history is now illustrated in new signs recently installed at Ahlberg Park adjacent to the bridge. Each year, hundreds of visitors stop at the park to photograph the bridge and it is also popular with bikers, bicyclists, runners, walkers and fishermen. The signs showcase historic photographs of the pioneer Ahlberg family who settled the area in the early 1900s, coming from Sweden. It was the Ahlbergs who built the original bridge after their cattle slipped on wet bridge boards. A covering was b...
To The Eagle: On March 3, at 6 p.m., at the Knappa High School gym, we had an opportunity to applaud Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality for doing the right thing regarding, we hope, the imminent demise of Northern Star's preposterous LNG project. Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality continues to refuse to bow to Northern Star's demands. ('Bradwood dealt triple permit blow' The Daily Astorian, February 23). For this courageous act, we are extremely grateful. Would that other public agencies, assigned to protect our...
To The Eagle: I too was deeply saddened by the arbitrary dismissal of Port District 2 manager Steve McClain. My family has enjoyed his friendship for more than 10 years. I don't care who you are, if you were engaged in conversation with Steve, the discussion invariably made its way to his vision for the Vista Park. So infectious was his love and enthusiasm for his life's work, I found myself asking how I could get involved. We started by relocating the horseshoe pits and last year added a second set to aid in tournament play. About five years a...
To The Eagle: In last week's paper, Richard Erickson was reported as stating that people who buy waterfront property across from the Wauna paper mill do not mind the mill's noise, lights and smell. This is false. Q.U.I.E.T. (Quell Unlawful Illegal Emissions Today) sent an anti-noise petition with 18 property owner's signatures to the mill in 2008. Prior to that, other property owners complained about the bright lights. Most of the sentiment is apathetic; you know, its worthless to fight it. What I hear, when I have conversations with most...
To The Eagle: I've attended a couple of town and county LNG-related meetings wherein the Sheriff's Office indicated it may double its force to provide security for LNG tankers in the Columbia River. Now that I found out a little bit about it, I don't get it. Why would we (the county) go into a new line of business even if it didn't cost us anything? The Coast Guard was on record in their water suitability study that they could accommodate LNG tanker traffic. Even though they might not want to, they are qualified to do all of the security work a...
