    The 2nd Annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby will be held August 29-30 according to Cathlamet area resident and VFW member, Bob Roche, who is organizing the event. "We believe it is the only salmon derby in the nation specifically for men and women who were injured while wearing the uniform of the United States," said Roche. He added, "We want to provide a unique Northwest experience for the Warriors and Widows, many of whom are from other parts of the country and have never fished for or even seen a large salmon.     Wahkiakum 4-H members from Carol Ervest's Sugar n Spice club modeled their outfits at the Sewing and Stitchery Expo Saturday, February 27 in Puyallup. Shelby McEneny, Lindsay Hunt and Grace Hunt, all of Grays River, were part of the 4-H dress revue contest at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup last September.   • Apprenticeship program offered

    The Wahkiakum Community Center, 101 Main St., Cathlamet, will host an informational session about the Construction Craft Laborer Apprenticeship Program on March 16, at 10 a.m. Participants must be 18 years of age with a 10th grade education and a valid driver’s license. Participants who finish the apprenticeship program will be eligible to apply for jobs building highways, water mains, treatment plants, light-rail systems, stadiums, airports, bridges, tunnels, factories and stores.     From March 12-April 10 the River Life Interpretive Center at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa, will feature an exhibit of art and science projects created by Wahkiakum School District students.     The Lady Mules took fifth place at the State 2B tournament after a loss to Mabton, 55-43, on Saturday. The Lady Mules led by as much as seven at one point, but Mabton outscored Wahkiakum by 15 points in the fourth quarter to win the game. Macie Elliott led the team in scoring with 13 points.
