The Mule Train heads to Spokane for the state tournament today (Thursday) following a last second (literally) victory over the Grizzlies of Bear Creek High School last Friday in Mt.Vernon. The Mules went into the game against the District 1/2 Champion Grizzlies as huge underdogs, with many in the online community (bsports.org) considering Bear Creek a lock to reach Spokane. Wyatt Parker opened the game with a short jumper in the lane to give the Mules a quick 2-0 lead, but the Mules quickly found themselves trailing 5-2 after a pair of Grizzly...

It looks like a few more snow flakes are in the forecast for this week. It would sure be nice to have more than one sunny day, though. At least then you could finish at least one outdoor project. I guess it wouldn’t be Washington without this kind of weather. Guess I’ll stick around and enjoy whatever comes. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley student and daughter of Lonnie and Kim Eaton, Taylor Eaton took first place in the Long Beach Elks Hoop Shoot in December. She then attended the district competition at Huntington Middle Sch...

The Wahkiakum School Board approved a trial dual sport participation policy at their February 22 meeting, paving the way for eligible athletes to participate in two sports this spring. The discussion about dual sport participation began in November after parents Wendy and Lamar Blix asked the district to consider allowing their son to participate in track and baseball. The board asked Athletic Director Marc Niemeyer to craft a draft policy based on input from district coaching staff and policies used by other districts. After consultation with...

submitted by Richard Swart Fire District 4 volunteer firefighters will hold an old-fashioned “Boot Campaign” Saturday and Sunday at the Cathlamet Chevron gas station on SR 4 to raise money for the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program (KDCCP). For at least 150 years, firefighters across America have turned out in force to hold out their boots to collect funds for charity. “This year, our members decided we wanted to serve the community some way in addition to fighting fires,” said District Fire Chief Jim Wilson. “Doing something t...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved a Shoreline Management Substantial Development Permit to help drain land along Seal Slough near Rosburg. The permit would allow replacement of an old culvert with a tidegate and installation of two new tidegates with culverts on the Amala family property on Kandoll Road. Applicant is the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District. The two new tidegates are to be above the normal floodplain level and wouldn't alter normal drainage; they would come into action during floods and help drain an area...

An L&I inspector issued citations September 22, 2011, after making inspections at the Puget Island Ferry landing and county road department shops. Eight of the violations had been corrected as of February 22. The citations included: 1. A ferry worker was observed working outside guardrails during mooring maneuvers while not wearing a required personal...
After publication of last week's edition, Cathlamet Council Member Dick Swart contacted The Eagle and requested a retraction, saying he was misquoted in an article about the council's discussion of a proposed ordinance for management of the Cathlamet Fire Department. The sentence read, " If there are errors, it’s the fault of the fire chiefs.” In an email, Swart wrote: The context at the February 22, 2012 Council meeting was my response to comments in First assistant Fire Chief Duncan Cruickshank’s monthly report about proposed Ordinance 548-1...
Wahkiakum County elk are in poor health, and citizens want something done about it. Residents and county commissioners discussed the situation Tuesday, and commissioners said they would invite officials from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to visit and discuss the hoof rot syndrome seen in local elk. Commissioner Dan Cothren, who travels the region in his logging industry employment and who is also a long-time hunter, said he has seen sick, dying and dead elk in most of the county's valleys. "It's pretty severe," Cothren...
Wahkiakum County commissioners interviewed three candidates nominated to step in as county treasurer with the pending retirement of incumbent Paula Holloway, who announced in early Feburary that she would retire at the end of the month. Nominated by the Wahkiakum County Democratic Central Committee, the three candidates displayed different backgrounds in interviews on Tuesday. After the interviews, the commissioners recessed into executive session to discuss the candidates. The commissioners adjourned without taking action; they have said they...

To The Eagle: I'm writing you to announce I'm running for county commissioner for District 1. I read last week's Eagle and Lisa Marsyla's letter saying she wouldn't be seeking reelection. I want to thank Lisa for a job well done in serving her constituents. I'd like the opportunity to do the same. If you have questions for me, email me at mike.backman4421@gmail.com. Mike Backman Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: On behalf of the Tsuga Art Association, I'd like to give a big thanks to all of you who joined us at the Tsuga Gallery for another opening this past Friday. We were quite amazed at how many people came, considering the rainy weather and after dark winter hours for the reception. Also, we'd like to extend a very special thanks to Gerry Ledtke and Rick Nelson who took the time to share their beautiful acoustic guitar music with us throughout the evening. It was much appreciated. The support we feel from all of you in this community...
To The Eagle: Our community deserves to know the context behind the Town Council's effort to draft a new ordinance governing the Cathlamet Fire Department (CFD). Unfortunately, The Eagle's recent coverage has failed to put this important legislation into perspective. Allow me to remedy that with a few important points: 1) The CFD has been operating virtually without Town oversight since 1932. Yes, our volunteers do fine work and have saved many lives over the years. But the culture within the department is openly hostile to the Town. Council...

It was a busy week-end at the fairgrounds with lots of horses and people enjoying our big covered arena. 4-H leader Val Rowe and her 4-H Horse Club kids, plus the parents of many of the kids and a few Pacific County Fair Board members came to look over our arena. While the 4-H Club members rode their horses, the parents, board members and I talked about the costs of building an arena like ours. We shared a potluck lunch that was delicious and then the kids saddled up their horses and took turns practicing gaming patterns for a few hours. It...
