For those fans that made the nine hour roundtrip journey to Sunnyside this past Saturday to watch the Wahkiakum Mules take on the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions in a loser-out, winner-to-state regional game, they were rewarded with a 63-36 Mule thrashing of the Mountain Lions in a relatively short-lived game. In a game that lasted less than an hour’s time, the Mules exerted their dominance over their North Central Washington adversaries, jumping out to a 19-8 first quarter lead en route to the 63-36 victory. Comparable to how the Mules finished ou...
WET & WINDY--The storm that blew in last Friday was certainly a wet and windy one. No one could attest to that better than the driver of the semi-double trailer truck that blew over on the Astoria Bridge, halting traffic for several hours. It wasn't long before we had a small lake in our field again. It's always amazing to me how fast the ducks and geese hear about the new pond in town! Saturday had us viewing the sun off and on, so that was a nice break from the downpouring rain. Everybody I talked to was ready to head to Hawaii for...
I picked my first bouquet of daffodils yesterday afternoon, so that must be a good sign of things to come, right? I see lots of baby sheep and calves being nurtured by their mothers in the fields along the highway and county roads. Spring must be almost here, new beginnings, new life and hopefully good things ahead for all of us. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley School kids are on Winter Break and will return to classes on Monday. I understand that the new coffee shop at the Appelo Archives center is now open and serving up...

State wildlife biologists plan to kill and collect samples from elk calves in several locations to help determine the cause of hoof disease in elk in southwest Washington. Starting this month, up to five young elk will be taken from industrial forestland in Pacific County for a comparative study of elk from the Cowlitz River Basin, where the disease has spread rapidly among elk since 2008. The study resulted from a suggestion from Wahkiakum County commissioners to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to investigate the cause of...

He left them in place and contacted the sheriff’s office. Commissioners agreed to hold a workshop with the Wahkiakum County Fair Board on March 19 to discuss employment of the fair manager. The fair manager position has been funded with Wahkiakum County Interlocal Cooperative funds, working through WSU Cooperative Extension, but that arrangement ended this week. Commissioners and other parties are considering if there's another arrangement that would allow flexibility in the manager's monthly hours. “I am waiting to h...

Is a local microbrewery on the horizon? At Monday’s Port District #1 meeting, a group of 10 local investors represented by Cathlamet businessman Richard Erickson presented a proposal to port commissioners to site a microbrewery on port-owned property at Elochoman Marina. The proposal asks the port to build and lease a 1,000-1,200 square foot building to the group for a five-year period. The Drop Anchor Brewery would sell kegs to local restaurants and growlers and souvenirs to tasting room visitors. Its tasting room would not offer full meals f...
To the Eagle: February is National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month. It is critical that we take this time to remember that domestic violence is not just a problem for adults. One in three adolescents in the United States will be a victim of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from a dating partner. Nearly 80% of girls who have been physically abused in their relationships continue to date their abuser. Two-thirds of teens who are in an abusive relationship do not report the abuse. A recent study by the Centers for...
To The Eagle: In last week’s Eagle, PUD Commissioner Bob Jungers maligned Cathlamet’s water system. He said: “One of the reasons they are in financial difficulty with their system is because their infrastructure has decayed to the point that their water losses are so high that they are manufacturing a lot of water that they’re not selling.” Respectfully, Mr. Jungers lives in a glass house. In Cathlamet’s most recent Annual Performance Report submitted to the Dept. of Health, our 3-year loss rate (2009-11) was 17.4 percent. In the PUD’s Annua...
To The Eagle: Looks like we might get a second chance! After the huge disappointment that the Naselle-Grays River Valley school bond didn't pass, I wanted to take this opportunity to plea for the no voters to give it more thought and perhaps choose to be supportive. I'm not sure of the demographics (other than west end Wahkiakum county soundly voting no), but I would imagine locals with kids and grandkids in our schools would generally be positive. They see first hand how an area that gets over 100 inches of rain a year might need more room...
