    Washington State Poet Laureate, Elizabeth Austen will appear at Cathlamet Public Library Friday, February 27, at 2 p.m., to give a poetry reading and talk about poetry. As the Washington State Poet Laureate for 2014-16, Elizabeth Austen is traveling to all 39 counties, offering writing workshops and giving readings.     According to Suzie Whalen, nutrition educator for WSU/Wahkiakum County Extension, the second My Plate tasting day at Wahkiakum grade/middle school will be held tomorrow (Friday.) This month’s section is dairy. The students have a very dairy friendly menu, and this month they had special yogurt parfaits for breakfast on Wednesday mornings, thanks to the Parent Teacher Organization.     Members of Altrusa International of Cowlitz County (The Breakfast Bunch) will continue their local tradition when they host the 7th annual Spell-ebration, an adult spelling bee. The event will be held at the Kelso Theater Pub on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. This is a major fundraiser for the Breakfast Bunch with proceeds primarily going to scholarships for local students but to other local charities as well.     OLYMPIA—The Senate’s new transportation package is being hailed for its bipartisan support, while some critics find aspects of it troubling.     The Washington Association of County Officials has announced that applications for the 2015/16 Washington Counties Scholarship Fund will be accepted beginning March 2. The scholarship, which was formerly administered by both the Washington Association of County Officials and the Washington State Association of Counties, will award up to five eligible children scholarships worth $3,000.     The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball won the 2B District IV Championship on Saturday night, thrilling their fans with a last minute win against Napavine, 49-47, at W.F.     Four Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers headed to the Tacoma Dome last weekend to participate in the 27th Annual Mat Classic State Wrestling Tournament. Wrestling at 132 pounds was Luke Stacey, at 138 pounds was Alex Johnson, at 160 pounds was Kody Vik and wrestling at 182 pounds was Trystan Mendez.
