    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 26, 2014

NOT BAD--Well, after a couple of freezing nights, we're back to a drippy kind of week, which isn't too bad, as once again, we're better off than a lot of other places in the states, so we'll count our blessings. DINNER UPDATE-- Last Saturday night, the Wahkiakum Fair Board had perfect weather in which to hold their belated Valentine Diamond Dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, so with no snow, no rain and no wind, grill masters, Blair Brady and Bill Coons once again served up some terrific steaks and portabella mushrooms for the diners. While...

Commissioners also began planning for the display of an historic gillnetter at Skamokawa Vista Park and discussed other business. The port has been remodeling and upgrading restrooms and other facilities and planned to have the RV camping section of the park open March 1, when the spring chinook fishing season opens. • County considers marijuana moratorium

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 26, 2014

With a second marijuana growing operation proposed for Puget Island, Wahkiakum County commissioners this week took steps to institute a moratorium on marijuana related facilities. The state liquor control board collects local agency comment before it approves license requests, and two weeks ago, commissioners gave a grudging 2-1 approval to a request for an operation planned by Shane Kehrli and Chris Bianchi on Puget Island at the intersection of State Road and SR 409. On Tuesday, the scenario repeated itself with another 2-1 local approval...

By a 3-0 vote, the board approved a request to authorize the District Court to increase hours of a part-time clerk from 69.5 hours per month to 89.5 hours at a potential extra annual expense of $4,000. Judge Faubion said the extra hours would be used only if necessary. Office staff time was reduced in budget cutting several years ago, he said, and never restored, and the office is struggling to keep up wit...

  • Cap'n Jonny Rush: A fish story

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 26, 2014

Cap’n Jonny Rush and his navigators ride the Big Red Dog, traveling the river byways, highway 101 and the I-5 corridor selling fish and drawing a crowd. You can call him Dr. Cholesterol. “I love everybody,” he said, “and I’m here to make you feel good. It gets cold and lonely in that bus, but I travel to several towns making sure people get their diet together. No more pork! No more fries, no more hamburgers! Get rid of the sugar.” Cap’n Jonny buys his fish from processors before they start addi...

  • Bill would study prospects of nuclear power in state

Rebecca Gourley, WNPA Olympa News Bureau|Feb 26, 2014

OLYMPIA — Emotions were high on the Senate floor earlier this month as legislators debated whether to pursue a proposal to study nuclear energy’s prospects in Washington. Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, says nuclear power safer and more efficient than in the past, and deserves a fresh look as a source for electricity. "Nuclear power will have a future in Washington state," he said during the Feb. 12 floor debate. Following the debate, a bill that would create a task force to study nuclear power as a replacement for fossil fuels passed w...

  • Bill modifies traffic stops for motorbikes

Rebecca Gourley, WNPA Olympa News Bureau|Feb 26, 2014

OLYMPIA—Riding a motorcycle around on a warm Northwest day is a relaxing pastime, unless you get stuck at a traffic light that just won't turn green. Traffic sensors are designed to help facilitate the flow of traffic by triggering a green light when a vehicle is detected at an intersection. Senate Bill 5141 would allow a motorcyclist to proceed through an intersection after waiting one full cycle — and "exercising due care" — If the sensors on a traffic signal fail to detect a motorcycle. The bill passed in the Senate on...

  • Smelt lover happy to have a turn at tasty fish

    Feb 26, 2014

To The Eagle: I am a smelt lover. I can feel someone out there thinking, “Good, you can have my share.” OK! For me, once the Christmas tree goes out the door on January 6, I look forward to a “mess (meal) of smelt”. Unfortunately, for several years only the seals and gulls have been able to enjoy them. Finally, we get our turn. I believe that food sources provided by nature, in a given area, are the foods we need to eat. Smelt are organic, a great source of protein, rich in Omega 3 and a whole lot tastier than fish oil pills. If you haven’t...

  • Don't talk about high speed internet, do it!

    Feb 26, 2014

To The Eagle: PUD Commissioner Robert Jungers should be commended for his insightful proposal to bring high-speed, fiber optic service to Wahkiakum residents and businesses. Throughout much of northern Europe and Asian countries like South Korea and Japan, fiber optic Internet service provides jobs and distance learning that leads to jobs. We’ve lost business start-ups and young families because jobs and educational opportunities exist elsewhere. We lack secure, high-speed websites that attract customers and employment. We need fiber optic s...

  • Master Gardener offers tips for garden dreams

    Diane Stockhouse, WSU/Wah. Co. Master Gardener|Feb 26, 2014

Early spring is a time for dreaming… and making a list of seeds to order… and planning. And making a list of projects to be done by planting time like building another raised bed or a pea trellis. While the rains are coming sideways and the days are still cool, sitting in your favorite chair pouring over seed catalogs (with a cup of tea and paper and pencil in hand) is a great way to while away the hours. Reading a seed catalog is much more fun than standing in front of seed racks in some store. Not that those seeds are not good&h...
