  • Woman's Club names Joyce Orr as citizen of the year

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 6, 2018

Joyce Orr may try to fly under the radar as a busy volunteer, but her warm, generous, and fun loving heart will always give her away. The Cathlamet Woman's Club took notice of all her good work around the community and decided to name her their Citizen of the Year. Orr spends a lot of her time at the Community Garden at Erickson Park in Cathlamet. She has been involved with the garden since its inception in 2010, and she and Winnie Lowsma have been in charge of it for the last four years. "We...

  • County commission holds hearing on 2019 budgets

    Rick Nelson|Dec 6, 2018

Wahkiakum County commissioners held a public hearing on proposed 2019 budgets Monday and addressed other business at their regular weekly meeting on Tuesday. Commissioners will take final action on the budgets later this month. Revenue for 2019 will be tight, as it has been the past few years, commissioners said. “It’s in the tank,” Commissioner Dan Cothren said of predicted revenue during the Monday meeting. The Current Expense Fund, which finances most courthouse offices and expenditures, depends on revenue from the harvest of timber on state...

  • Naturalist writer RM Pyle branches into fiction

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 6, 2018

Grays River writer Robert Michael Pyle's latest book tour is winding down, but lucky Wahkiakum residents can hear him read from his first work of fiction at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa on Saturday, December 15. Nearly five decades ago, inspired by a book about a butterfly, Pyle found himself wanting to tackle a novel. "I wanted to write a fully realized human novel but with an animal as an important part of it, as a lever, a fulcrum for the story, but not stealing the stage from the people," Pyle...

  • PUD conservation dollars go to work

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 6, 2018

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners got an update on how conservation dollars were being used, learned about water pressure issues on Puget Island and approved a resolution that authorized a mutual aid agreement for a water system intertie in Skamokawa. Lia Sealund, a customer service representative, said that the PUD was a little over halfway through the current biennium for their energy efficiency program, which began in October 2017. Thus far they have expended about 72 percent...

  • For council, elections are the best way out

    Dec 6, 2018

To The Eagle, Bill Wainwright’s letter, published last week, was intriguing. If, as he claims, three members of the town council coordinated to meet separately with a consultant they subsequently hired, it would appear to constitute a serial meeting in violation of the Open Public Meetings Act. The fact that two other council members were not invited to meet the consultant is good for them (legally speaking) but also underscores the damaging extent to which the mayor fosters an in group, out-group dynamic on the council and the secrecy he c...

  • Stars program needs your help

    Dec 6, 2018

To The Eagle: In the time that my family lived in Cathlamet over the past seven years, we were blessed in some of those years to have received holiday help from the Stars program. Thanks to the generosity of kind local donors in those years, my children were given wonderful gifts of much needed clothing and shoes (which were all we hoped for and anticipated-as it is a needs based program vs a toy wish program), as well as thoughtful bonus gifts of toys which made their Christmas mornings magical. I could not have managed those Christmas...

  • Thoughts on anti-gun control law

    Dec 6, 2018
    1

To The Eagle: I saw the letter to the editor about making an anti-gun control law here in Wahkiakum County and was overjoyed at the idea. The state made this law, fully aware it goes against the intent of the constitution. I dislike where this law is headed; it’s only the first step and needs to be opposed no matter what your feeling about guns are. It’s called civil disobedience, and our nation is founded on it since that day they threw the tea overboard. Don Kinney Cathlamet...

  • We need to band together to fix this

    Dec 6, 2018

To The Eagle: Thanks Kent Martin for writing so eloquently on the effects of urban/suburban rule-making for rural parts of the state. I first heard you present that perspective about a year ago and it set me thinking that this issue is not limited to just fishing, and not just to Wahkiakum county. The same problem is lurking behind other issues of the day: for example in timber management, the urban/suburban destruction of their own areas, and their voting power to force rural areas to make up for their own problem; in gun rights, their...

  • Auditor gives thanks

    Dec 6, 2018

To The Eagle: Thank you. Thank you Wahkiakum County for electing me as your Auditor. Thank you for putting your trust in me for the next four years. Soon, the General Election will be over. The ballots are counted and the decisions have been made. I feel extremely fortunate to have retained my position as your auditor. The immense amount of support I have received over the course of this campaign has been truly overwhelming. From allowing me to display my signs in your yards, to monetary contributions and moral support, I couldn’t have done thi...

  • Last Flea Market of year to be held this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 6, 2018

NIPPY BEGINNING--We went from the 40s and 50s right down into the nippy upper 20s at the beginning of this week in West Valley, with the likelihood of it dropping down into the lower 20s by the time you read this, so I do hope you had those pipes wrapped and were ready for those bone-chilling temperatures! I know it's December, but beings I really hate being that cold and dealing with "my water might freeze up" issues, I can only hope this cold spell doesn't last too long. Besides, the holidays are just around the corner and I'd like to be...

  • Christmas concert set for December 14

    Dec 6, 2018

River of Life Assembly of God will host a Christmas Concert featuring American Idol Finalist Phil Stacey on Friday, December 14 at 7 p.m. Phil Stacey's first appearance on the sixth season of American Idol was a memorable one, as it was revealed that the United States Sailor was missing the birth of his second daughter in order to audition for the show in Memphis. It was a memorable introduction to the American public, presenting the Jacksonville, FL, native in a very appealing light. Of course, it helped that Stacey (age 29 at the start of the...

  • Planners accept Port 2 20-year disposal permit

    Rick Nelson|Dec 6, 2018

The Wahkiakum County Planning Commission last Thursday accepted a recommendation for approval of a shoreline substantial development permit for Port District 2. The permit would cover a 20-year program for deposition of dredge spoils at Skamokawa Vista Park. The US Army Corps of Engineers uses the park’s waterfront as a dredge spoils site. Port 2 sells sand from the deposit, paying the state Department of Natural Resources a royalty, for the state claims ownership of the sand. Past shoreline permits have been for five years. Wahkiakum County P...
