    Last November, the Wahkiakum Family Practice Advisory Council held public meetings to present findings and request citizen input. One of the key public recommendations made at the Cathlamet meeting was to form a fundraising committee of clinic supporters and patients. An organizing meeting will be held on March 16 at the River Street Meeting Room from 6-7:30 p.m. Those who wish to keep health care in the community are invited.     Alan Bennett, superintendent of the Naselle-Grays River School District, reported last week Naselle-Grays River K-8 Principal Karen Wirkkala has been elected Distinguished Principal of the Year by her peers.     Federal economic stimulus money for Wahkiakum County public works will be almost enough to resurface one road, county Commissioners Dan Cothren, Blair Brady and Lisa Marsyla learned Tuesday. Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported that recent reports from state officials say the county will receive about $200,000 in federal economic stimulus money.     School districts everywhere are feeling the economic pinch and Wahkiakum School District is no exception. Superintendent Bob Garrett on Tuesday spoke to board members and teachers about the possible cuts for the 2009-10 school year. What was once believed to be a statewide deficit of $6 billion is now $8 billion and could increase before the scheduled adjournment of legislature in late April.     Three Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers won matches but not enough to earn medals at the state Mat Classic Wrestling Tournament last weekend at the Tacoma Dome. In the 160 lb. class, senior Joel Fudge started the tournament with an 8-6 overtime win over Dustin Taylor of Wilber-Creston.     The Wahkiakum Community Foundation announced this week the hiring of Puget Island resident Sarah Lawrence as the foundation's new executive director. Lawrence, who moved to the Island about two years ago, served last year as manager of the Wahkiakum County Fair. As both jobs are part-time, she will continue as fair manager and also serve as director of the foundation.     The Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) announced this week the award of a Community Salmon Fund grant to the Naselle-Grays River School District. The grant is funded through the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to CREST in the amount of nearly $24,000. The grant will provide a greenhouse on school grounds that will focus on native plants.     More than 300 Washington state youth and adults participated in this year’s WSU Extension 4-H Know Your Government Conference in Olympia.     The Naselle Comets knocked the Wahkiakum Mules out of the SW Washington Class 2B basketball tournament with a 69-39 win last Saturday. The Comets led 24-7 after one quarter and 39-15 at halftime. The loss ended the Mules' season; the Comets stayed alive but lost 60-50 to the Adna Pirates Tuesday and were eliminated from the tournament.
