  • Drifter's Moon Band at Valley Bible Church

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 24, 2011

Looks like snow and colder weather is on the way. Time to stock up on a few necessary supplies just in case. Remember to check on your animals, make sure their water is thawed and available, and that they have a warm, dry place to bed down. It’s also a good idea to check on your neighbors just in case they need something that you might be able to help them with. We’re all in this weather pattern together, so it can’t do any harm to help each other out. News from Naselle: The first grade class at Naselle School was alive with excitement that...

  • Trojans put an end to Mules' season

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 24, 2011

A strong second-half comeback wasn’t enough to keep the Wahkiakum Mules’ season alive as they fell 59-54 to the Pe Ell Trojans last Friday night in the Class 2B boys basketball tournament at Rochester High School. Things looked grim early on for the Mules after a tough-luck first half in which nothing seemed to fall through the nets, putting the team in a 13-point hole at the break. The second half was a whole different story. The Mules came storming back to tie the game at 46-46 less than two minutes into the final frame. The Trojans hit som...

Committee chair John Dees led a dozen persons through a presentation of survey results and comments from respondents. • Foreclosure morass sinks Wahkiakum residents

    Ruby Murray|Feb 24, 2011

The foreclosures that hit the county’s real estate market in 2009 continue to depress the local housing market, and local realtors fear more are on the way. A review of Wahkiakum County Property Sales spreadsheet indicated nine foreclosures countywide in 2008, 14 in 2009 and only one 2010. The sales of foreclosed properties, from banks to individuals climbed proportionately, from two in 2008, seven in 2009 and 21 in 2010. Wahkiakum County Assessor’s Chief Deputy/Appraiser Denny Bryant has been working his way through home assessments for dis...

High speed broad band internet access is coming to Wahkiakum, Pacific and Cowlitz counties. A not-for-profit King County company, Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet), is working on a contract to install the lines in the state's rural counties, and they plan to start installing a fiber optic line along SR 4 in mid-April. Company representative Ted Perry told the Cathlamet Town Council Tuesday that it needed a franchise agreement with the town to install the lines along Columbia, River and Una streets, with a branch to the Cathlamet schools....

Commissioners agreed to hold a workshop next Tuesday, 1 p.m., to work on an ordinance to regulate application of biosolids in the county. Members of the Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization (BOE) this week offered their own plan to equalize property assessments on Puget Island. Last week, Assessor Bill Coons asked the county board of commissioners to approve a resolution calling for a special session of the county Board of Equalization to consider property tax appeals from Puget Island land owners. He hoped that because of the large number of appeals, the Board of Equalization will be able to adjust values for all Island parcels. Commissioners delayed action on Coon's proposed...

  • Artist Dory Hicks: A retrospective

    Ruby Murray|Feb 24, 2011

Dory Hicks knew she was an artist when she was five years old, and she’s been painting life around her since. While her images are entwined with community life in Skamokawa, Hicks has also painted moments in the world history that spoke to her, such as the joy she saw when Nelson Mandela was released from prison. “I was intrigued by the energy at Mandela’s release,” she said of her painting as she gave a tour through a retrospective exhibit at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa. Community members loaned work for the exhibit since a fire about five ye...

To The Eagle: In January of this year, the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV) released new research on domestic violence homicides in Washington State. Sixty eight women, men and children were murdered by an abuser in the last two years. "These homicides tell us where we are falling short," said Nan Stoops, executive director of WSCADV. "They make it clear that we cannot rely on any one system or agency alone to end domestic violence. We all have a role to play." The study puts forth 11 key goals for change....

  • Saggy mattress saga

    Feb 24, 2011

To The Eagle: During the last week of March 2010, I purchased a mattress from a store in Kelso for the sum of about $500. This mattress was purchased with the thought that it would be beneficial to my wife as she suffers from an arthritic spine. For a few months all went well. In early autumn my wife started to complain about the mattress being uncomfortable. Finally in December, we inspected the mattress. There was an almost two inch sag in the mattress. We then contacted the store about this problem. We were told that we had to have...

To The Eagle: I want to thank Mr. Kimmel for his letter (The Eagle December 16, 2010) entitled “Vendetta” and addressed to me. My thanks and that of many people in Wahkiakum County go to Mr. Kimmel for reminding all of us that the management of Cathlamet’s Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) needs to be addressed. The managers of our FD and EMS still have not answered my questions (The Eagle December 9, 2010) or inquiries of the mayor or city council, thus avoiding transparency. A small but relevant oversight by the FD/EM...
