The Mules will be heading to central Washington this weekend as they clinched a berth to regionals with four wins this past week. Facing elimination following their second loss of the season to seventh-seeded Winlock, the third-seeded Mules found themselves in a loser-out matchup against the top-seeded Pacific League champions, the Raymond Seagulls. The Mules, however, quickly silenced any fears of a two-and-out appearance as they jumped on the Gulls early, racing to a 20-8 first quarter lead, and never looking back for a 69-33 win. Senior...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey Wahkiakum wrestling has a tradition; all state placers get a banner on the wrestling room wall. There are banners from earlier wrestlers such as Nabor Mendez, and a banner for our 2012 champion, Blayne Edwards. The time has come to order a pair of new banners to add to the wall. For the Mat Classic XXV state tournament last Friday and Saturday in Tacoma, the Mules were able to bring five boys guaranteed competition and two more hoping for an opportunity through the alternate system. Unfortunately doors did not...
NOT ALL BAD--Our weekend weather wasn't totally bad, although it certainly was not as nice as last Thursday’s wonderful sunshine! For those traveling to basketball games, it was either nice and dry or pouring down rain. While I preferred the dry part, I'm just glad the downpours were usually short-lived. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this week include Rebecca Castillo, Nick Tarabochia, Darrin Dow, Wyatt Parker, Ray Danielsen, Mary Hedman McLaughlin, Morgan Spieth, Sally Nollan, Ursula Jorgensen and Shari Gorman Parker. Belated b...

Wahkiakum School District’s board of directors approved a policy on Tuesday night prohibiting the use, possession, or distribution of marijuana on school district property and also discussed the payment of transportation costs for summer extracurricular programs. Last fall, Washington voters approved Initiative 502, which legalized the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana for people age 21 and older. However, public use of marijuana remains unlawful and violators can be fined. At their January 24 meeting, board members directed District...
Wahkiakum PUD Manager Dave Tramblie will not receive a bonus in appreciation for his stewardship of the PUD’s $2.3 million substation construction project that was completed last month. The project was originally projected to cost $3 million but stayed more than $500,000 under budget. Tramblie told PUD commissioners meeting Tuesday that a few minor vouchers remained to be paid in February, but that he did not think the cost would increase much beyond the $2,278,309 already paid for the work. At the utility directors’ February 5 meeting, Com...
Port District 2 will soon have a new office at Skamokawa Vista Park. A contractor delivered a park model cabin on Tuesday. Once the building is set up, port staff will use it for an office. Port commissioners hope to construct a stick built building in the future for a permanent office; this would free the park model to be a rental for campers. The port plans to hire contractors to upgrade electrical wiring in that part of the park. They said they'd try to upgrade wiring in other parts of the park next year, if they can budget the money....
Diking District 4 Commissioner Maurice Mooers and two federal agencies remain as far apart as ever in agreeing on a plan to replace the Steamboat Slough Dike. The Columbia River is eroding the dike, and geotechnical engineers say a breach is possible at any time. That would flood the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge. No one has funds to repair the eroding dike. The US Fish and Wildlife Service, which owns the refuge, and the US Army Corps of Engineers have proposed building a new dike set back from the shoreline, and then breaching...
The Cathlamet Town Council on Tuesday voted to offer the Helping Hand Food Bank a site in Erickson Park to locate a new building for the food bank. Helping Hand administrators had requested the town lease a lot at the corner of 2nd and Beal streets, near the Elochoman Slough Marina, so they could site a new building. They had made a similar request last spring, and after town sponsored community meetings, a proposal went to the council to site the new food bank in Erickson Park near the tennis courts. There was public opposition to the...
Gail Witham wanted a cat. On December 13, Gene and Gail Witham’s daughters, Carley Tipton and Collyn Roberts made a last-minute decision to bring a cat that Roberts had found. This was a bit of an anomaly. Coordinating a time to be together is difficult with their schedules. Making a last minute decision? Never happens. Witham spent 42 years in law enforcement. If you tell him where you are coming from, he’ll tell you how long it’s going to take you to arrive at your destination. He’s very ac...
To The Eagle: I’m engaged in an effort to convince our state Legislature to exempt rural school districts from high-cost state prevailing wage requirements. Such an exemption would save our school district $2 million (or more) on an $8 million construction program. On February 13 I testified in Olympia before a Senate committee hearing in favor of proposed bill SB 5508 for that purpose. FYI: Ohio exempts all school construction. First, I’d like to publicly thank Sen. Hatfield for agreeing to sponsor this bill as a result of a cam...
To The Eagle: The volunteers and officers of Grays River Valley Fire and Rescue District #3 would like to thank Wahkiakum West for its generous donation of funds to purchase audiovisual equipment for the new Grays River Fire Hall. As many of you know, the Grays River hall was damaged in flooding six years ago and was deemed unsafe and beyond repair. It has taken several years to acquire the funds and property necessary to build the new hall on high ground in Grays River. That new facility should be completed in the coming weeks. We needed...
To The Eagle: Hello. My name is Sam Okawa (get it?) and I'm an elderly Anatolian shepherd (dog) who moved here about four years ago. I read with interest Kay Chamberlain's piece in last Thursday's Eagle because my home and Ursula (my "person") were mentioned in it. It appears that someone was concerned that the eight rescued cows living here after they were taken, almost dead from starvation, from an abandoned farm, were not being fed and that good Samaritan felt intervention was necessary to "save" them. How that person saved the bovines is a...
