  • Commissioners, public discuss dredging, culvert

    Rick Nelson|Feb 16, 2017

With little formal business on the agenda, Wahkiakum County commissioners largely worked on issues raised by members of the public when the board met Tuesday. Issues included, for the most part, dredging and culvert cleaning. After approving the consent agenda at the start of the meeting, the board moved to public comment. Randy Shroyer of Cape Horn requested an update on the board's efforts to have dredging projects permitted by state and federal agencies. The board intends to set up a 10-year program to have dredges deposit sand on eroding...

  • Democrats seek to shield Washingtonians from President's executive orders

Enrique Perez de la Rosa, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Feb 16, 2017

OLYMPIA, Feb. 16 — Washington State Democrats have introduced legislation they say will protect residents from recent presidential executive orders. At a news conference Wednesday called by House Democrats, Sen. Guy Palumbo (D-Maltby) said the legislation is meant to shield the state from affairs in the nation’s capital related to President Donald John Trump’s executive orders. “Democrats are trying to find a way to build a wall around Washington State to keep D.C. out, and this hateful rhetoric and all these actions,” Palumbo said. On the sa...

Enrique Perez de la Rosa, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Feb 16, 2017

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Feb. 20 - On March 30, 1942, about four months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, then-22-year-old Kay Sakai was removed from her home on Bainbridge Island and taken by ferry to Seattle under armed guard. "Will I ever see my home again? How long are we going to be gone? Where are we going?" Sakai asked herself as she saw the island get smaller and smaller behind her, she said. "It goes through your mind. No answers." It was the first leg of a three-day journey to the M...

Commissioner Bob Kizziar reported that an individual with Estuary Partners had approached him at a recent park planning meeting to ask if there was any interest in a water trail, which would be used by non-motorized boats. According to Kizziar, the man said he would speak with some federal...

  • Quit fanning the flames

    Feb 16, 2017
    1

To The Eagle: In your disregard for the clear majority of voters in this county (57 percent for Trump, 35 percent for Hillary), will you continue to scold and cajole your readership with your editorial bias? As owner and publisher you control the message. After eight long years of living with the miserable economy and social racial division from the Democrat administration, many of us voted for change. And now, three weeks into the new presidency, we’re told to believe that he is not “legitimate,” indeed, that he’s Hitler. A silly and hysterica...

  • Easy to file an appeal

    Feb 16, 2017

To The Eagle: Attention Wahkiakum County home and property owners: Some info for thought! If you are dissatisfied with your new home appraisals like I was, then you should file an appeal like I did. It’s easy to do to find comparison properties, then send the info to the Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization. Sometimes your figures stay the same, or sometimes they are lowered. It does not cost a fee, just a little paperwork. Get the paperwork from Bill at his office. I did this and my assessed fee was lowered $96,200! Well worth the p...

  • State driver's license fails REAL ID test

    Feb 16, 2017

Your driver’s license might not fly with airport security in less than a year’s time if the state fails to meet federal identification and travel laws. The law requires travelers to provide proof of legal residency with documents such as a passport or enhanced driver’s license. Non-compliant states without deadline extensi...

  • Crab & oyster feed at Norse Hall Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 16, 2017

MUCH DIFFERENT--This past weekend we saw some sunshine and much more pleasant conditions than the last one. No white stuff, yeah! It was nice to catch a break after all the snow and rain, which led to road closures and tons of trees coming down, so a huge relief there. Many parts of the county still have plenty of water standing around however, so I'm pretty sure they are not looking for the rains to return, which should be by the time you read this. Let's hope it's not much. As this work week begins however, it's clear skies and sunshine, but...

  • Sunny Monday is great for writer's dogs

    Trudy Fredrickson|Feb 16, 2017

I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed that beautiful day of sunshine on Monday. My dogs were in heaven as we walked for about two hours in the woods and of course had to stop a few times so they could take a dip in all three creeks. Mice are easier to catch after the water goes down in the flooded fields, so they enjoyed quite a few snacks as well. Hopefully we will see more of that kind of weather soon. Even though I love the rain, I’m not so partial to the five inches of silt that gets deposited on my driveway, or the mess it mak...
