  • Pirates top Mules

    Feb 11, 2010

The host Adna Pirates handed the Wahkiakum Mule basketball team a 60-50 loss last Saturday despite another record setting performance by Mule senior Cody Olsen. Olsen scored 22 points to become the Mules' all-time scoring leader with 1,539 points. He broke a record which his father, Mule Coach Bill Olsen, set in 1979 with 1,528 points. The Mules led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 23-19 at halftime. They outscored the Pirates 15-13 in the third quarter, but Adna racked up a...

Other finalists for the Mules were Blayne Edwards, Mitchell...

  • Lots of events on Valentine weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

NOT TOO BAD--Monday wasn't too bad; some fog in the morning and lots of sunshine, which was nice after several days of partially wet and cold. Looks like the dry streak won't last long as by the time you read this, we'll be ready for more raindrops and maybe even some wind. At least we aren't "shoveling" our weather, as those folks back East got hammered with a couple of feet of snow, so we're looking good. The only down side is that we might be singing the blues when our lack of snow pack brings us a drought this summer. Let's hope that...

On January 28, Manager Dave Tramblie sent a letter to customers in the affected area informing them that he was considering applying for a matching grant to extend water system service to the area along SR4 west of Deep River. • Foreign steel a problem for ferry ramp

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

The contract to construct the ramp for the ferry "Wahkiakum" may end up in court. The contractor, Bergerson Construction of Astoria, has admitted using steel made in Mexico in the project, which goes against clauses in the federal funding grant which require all steel to be produced in the United States. The contractor, state, local and federal officials are discussing the matter to determine whether not the grant terms have been violated. "There is a potentially serious problem brewing with the ferry landing contract," Pete Ringen, county...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

The ferry "Wahkiakum" is scheduled to be out of service February 15 and 16 as Bergerson Construction installs a new ramp at the Puget Island ferry landing. Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Pete Ringen said late last week that the contractor is "able to delay the shutdown for the early morning runs on the 15th which will provide a little more lee-way to those who depend on the ferry." The ferry will be shutdown starting at 7:30 a.m. Monday, he said, and it will resume normal operating schedule at 5 a.m. on Wednesday. "In other words, we...

Last week, Sheriff Dan Bardsley announced that the negotiator for NorthernStar had informed him that the company would end negotiations with the county for the service. On Tuesday of this week, that stance changed. "I had a call today and was told they want to continue negotiations," Bardsley said Tuesday afternoon. NorthernStar wants to build an LNG...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

Congressman Brian Baird visited Cathlamet last Friday to gather input on needs and concerns local constituents have for him in his final year in office. Baird, who was elected in 1998, has announced he will not seek re-election. He met Friday with local elected officials and held a town hall meeting to talk with the public. Baird's theme seemed to be, "Do the math," a sentence he used several times in his appearances. The numbers most discussed centered on jobs, the economy and national debt....

The plaintiffs, Joy Johnson, Earl Johnson and Peder Johnson, have until February 25 to file a notice of appeal to the state supreme court. If the supreme court doesn't accept the decision, the case will return to Wahkiakum Superior Court where a new ruling will be entered. In 1936, John and Helen Johnson conveyed property at...

  • Senator's thoughts on why I-960 should be amended

    Feb 11, 2010

To The Eagle: In 1912 some simple language amended our State’s constitution and created the initiative process. Ninety-eight years later, the process has rendered our state almost ungovernable by shifting power to a narrow spectrum of people whose aim is not to govern, but to strangle government altogether. Initiatives are a big business in Washington. Since 2002, nearly $7.2 million has been paid to companies whose only business is gathering signatures to put measures on the ballot – and these measures always promise lower taxes. Som...

  • Opinion

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

I would never use the term "lame duck" to describe Representative Brian Baird. In the 16 years he has served this area and this district in Congress Baird has done so much to get federal agencies to pay attention to local concerns and so much to get the Washington establishment to pay attention to constituent concerns that the words "duck" and "lame" don't apply. However, that term is used to describe an elected official who is nearing the end of his term and apparently has limited effectiveness, and he is starting to resemble parts of that...
