The Wahkiakum Mules wrestling team has begun post season performances with a powerful presentation at the sub-regional tournament. At tournament time the competition is divided by gender, with the men’s and women’s competitions taking place in separate locations. The Mules came into the weekend with 12 wrestlers able to compete at Ocasta in the men’s brackets. Arial Snodgrass, the lone lady Mule, went to her sub-regional competition at Heritage High School where all the lady wrestlers compete in one division, regardless of school size. With...

In the overtime period the young Mules outscored the Pirates 6-4 with Whitney Kuller's shot providing the winning margin. "Dallas Gott turned another defensive gem, and despite being shortest Mule, gathered in seven rebounds,"...
BEEN NICE--I think the last part of last week and the weekend were definitely mood boosters, as the sun was shining and the birds were chirping and some flowers, like my snowdrops were blooming and it was just great to see the sunshine for more than a day at a time, so it was most enjoyable for sure! I guess I could have done without the wind, which made things a little chillier, but hey, at least we weren't wading through flood waters or digging out of snowbanks like some of the rest of the country was doing. If you happened to be up late on...

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners discussed a coming increase in utility taxes at their February 7 meeting but took no action on the matter. The Cathlamet Town Council passed a resolution in December to increase their utility tax from 3 to 6 percent, and the new tax rate goes into effect February 18. That timing does not coincide with the PUD’s regular meter reading schedule and might necessitate the expense of an additional meter reading cycle, said PUD Auditor Erin Wilson. She reported she has been in conversation with Mayor George Wehrfritz a...
Wanted: A temporary home for Cathlamet's Bradley Memorial Library. Town officials plan to have the town hall building remodeled this year, and they want to move the library to temporary quarters while the work goes on. "We want to keep the library open and intact the entire time of construction," Mayor George Wehrfritz said Monday. "We will have to move." Wehrfritz, Librarian Connie Christopher and members of the Cathlamet Library Advisory Board are searching the Cathlamet area for temporary quarters. The library collection totals about 15,000...

Matt Beaulaurier has resigned from the Cathlamet Fire Department's First Aid Division, leaving local ambulance service without a paramedic. Beaulaurier told The Eagle on Tuesday that he is resigning for personal reasons. He works full-time as a firefighter/paramedic for Pacific County District 4 First Aid and has volunteered with the Cathlamet ambulance, which serves all eastern Wahkiakum. "It was getting hard to do both," he said. "I want to spend more time at home. "I hope I can come back in the future." First Aid Division officers say the...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday adopted an ordinance setting tax levies for 2012 and worked on other items business with Assessor Bill Coons. Coons said that because of several factors, the chief of which is a reduction in the state levy, that the county's overall levy will be down about $39,000 this year. Overall, however, the county's real property ratio is at 111 percent, which means some property is over valued. "That's because we aren't on an annual valuation," he said. "If we had annual valuation, we could adjust to the...
To The Eagle: I'm writing this letter to publicly express my gratitude to the four FFA boys from Wahkiakum High School and their teacher, Kyle Hurley, for the much needed help I received from them last weekend. They loaded 75 concrete blocks, each weighing at least 40 pounds, onto a flatbed truck and transported them from my good and generous friend Michele Smith's farm to my yard where they neatly stacked them in rows. I plan to use them for two 4' x 8' raised garden beds. The boys and Kyle did this for me as a community service project, a...

We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. As they shoveled out rocks they found the concrete enclosure was crushed and the pipe was squashed flat. It is fixed now and next time, far in the future I hope, we...
This week, we bid adieu to Reporter Ruby Murray. She joined our staff a little over a year ago and has produced some outstanding work. We'll miss her, and we wish her good luck. Following is her farewell: On becoming a novelist by Ruby Murray A year ago I stopped fulltime work...
