    Eight hands reached for a loose ball last week in the Mule-Viking game. Involved for the Mules are, l-r, Shelby Deaton, Kari Schillios and Jordyn Wirkkala. The Wahkiakum Lady Mules basketball team lost two games to tough Central League opponents this past week. On Tuesday, the Mules traveled to Toutle and lost 51-41 to the Ducks after leading 24-23 at halftime. The Ducks outscored the Mules 16-9 in the third quarter and 10-8 in the fourth.     The Charlotte House in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County’s only domestic violence (DV) shelter, is over a decade old and continues to address local needs. The DV advocacy program began in 1996 in association with the St. James Family Center. In 2000 the center took over the Charlotte House from the county. The Charlotte House provides shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. County Commissioner Blair Brady was present and told the board that he was in Olympia recently looking into funding for help with a new substation among other projects. The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team endured a tough 61-53 home loss to Adna January 30 and a 68-57 upset loss Friday at Mossyrock as Central League action draws to a close. The Mules entertained the undefeated and top ranked Toutle Lake Ducks last night (Wednesday) and close the season on the road at Morton today (Thursday).     Holes in the federal budget and new requirements for permits are delaying Puget Island ferry and erosion control work, Wahkiakum County commissioners learned Tuesday. Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported that it is no longer certain that ship channel dredge spoils will be placed along East Sunny Sands this summer. Ringen and Commissioner Dan Cothren agreed they had been told last fall that a dredge would place the spoils along the beach, which is subject to erosion from jetties used to direct current in the ship channel.     The ferry Wahkiakum will have to go to drydock this month for a US Coast Guard inspection, Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Pete Ringen said this week. Ringen hoped to have details of the closure settled next week. The US Coast Guard rejected a county appeal for a deadline extension for the inspection.
