    Ronald James Bigelow, 80, of Cathlamet, died January 5, 2016 at the Hospice Care Center. He was born in Long Beach, Calif., to Vernon and Katherine (Welton) Bigelow. He served in the Air Force for 22 years, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a test flight mechanic for Boeing in Seattle until retiring in 1992. He moved to Cathlamet 23 years ago from Pacific, Wash. On December 24, 1975, he married Joyce A. Wilson in Lancaster, Calif. She survives him at home. He also leaves behind a...

    Anticipating a return of 299,200 adult spring chinook salmon, fishery managers from Washington and Oregon set this year’s initial fishing season to run through April 9 on the lower Columbia River. In addition, representatives from the two states agreed to close the winter sturgeon retention fishery in the Bonneville Pool effective Feb. 8 and approved a six-hour recreational smelt season Feb. 6 on the Cowlitz River.     The Lady Mules loss to Napavine last Thursday spurred two more wins this week against Onalaska and Napavine.     Though the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team struggled with two more losses last week, they were able to add another tally to their win column when they beat Onalaska 49-41 at home on Saturday. Zach Brown led scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Quigley and Joey Moore had 12 points apiece. R. Quigley also had five rebounds. Luke Brown and Hank Ferguson added two points each.     Peyton Souvenir, a junior at Wahkiakum High School was selected last week as a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Athlete of the Week. Souvenir was nominated by a community member for leading the Mules to three wins against Pe Ell, Winlock and Mossyrock while scoring a total of 79 points.
