The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team used a third quarter explosion to post a 64-57 Central League victory over the White Pass Panthers last Friday. The Mules had a good start and led 16-12 after one quarter. The lid went on the basket, however, and the visiting Panthers led 25-22 at halftime. The Panthers boosted that lead to eight points in the third quarter. That's when the Mules came alive. Steals and rebounds generated offense, and Brad Pugh, Troy Howard and Cody Olsen hit some shots to...
The Wahkiakum Lady Mules basketball team used speed and quickness to defeat the Mossyrock Vikings 58-43 Tuesday evening in Cathlamet. The Mules took control of the boards, stole Viking passes and put together fast breaks for a 21-9 first quarter lead. Mossyrock tried to fight back, but they couldn't overcome the Mules speed and quickness. The Mules led 33-18 at halftime and 46-35 after three quarters. Halie Boyce led the Mule scoring with 23 points. Jordyn Wirkkala and Evelyn Clark each had 14,...
On Tuesday, the battle for first place in the Pacific League boys basketball standings took place in a crowded gym in Naselle, with the Comets beating South Bend 69-55. The Comets spurted out with a quick basket and never looked back. After the first quarter, the Comets led 19-8. South Bend closed the gap to two points, Naselle 27, South Bend 25 at the half. The Comets made a great run in the third, up 16 at one point and ending the quarter leading 47-37. The fourth was a real battle, heavy with South Bend defense. Some very clutch free throws...
STILL WET--While we had some dry days last week, this month began with quite a bit of rain and a pretty nasty Monday. While things are supposed to be a bit drier for the next couple of days, it looks like the rain will be back by the end of the week. While it isn’t really very cold, with temps in the upper 40s and low 50s, the dampness seems to seep into old bones. I can remember snow falling on Valentines Day before, so I guess we should count our blessings that we only seem to have the “wet stuff” falling right now. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celeb...

Larry G. Martin, 75, of Cathlamet, passed away on January 27, 2010 in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born on August 9, 1934 in Baker, Montana to Bernard and Mae (Foltz) Martin. He obtained a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering from Montana State College. He was a family man whose passions were hunting, fishing, camping and being with his grandchildren. He held “Grandpa’s Gator Driving School” and prided himself in “extorting” fresh homemade cookies from anyone who would fall for his ruse. His research into his family genealogy resulted...

The Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department probably won't provide security for shipments of liquefied natual gas (LNG) to the proposed Bradwood Landing plant. Sheriff Dan Bardsley said Tuesday that it appears NorthernStar Natural Gas, the parent company of Bradwood Landing, is pulling out of negotiations. County officials and NorthernStar personnel met two weeks ago for a negotiating session. Last week, county officials communicated their latest offer to NorthernStar negotiator Michael Sparks. "I may be premature, but I talked at length...
The Wahkiakum County Health Department is planning some educational programs on rules regarding installation of septic sewer systems. County commissioners received complaints a few weeks ago in a public meeting and asked that the unhappy permit applicants meet with Health Deparment Administrator Judy Bright when she returned from vacation. That meeting occurred last week, and Bright and Commissioner Lisa Marsyla, who also attended, said it went well. "We hope we have a solution that will work for them," Bright told the board of commissioners Tu...
Wahkiakum County road crews will continue to work on protecting Mattson Road, Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported Tuesday. The Grays River has been eating into the road, and the county recently was able to place a protective rock blanket where the erosion occurs. However, Mattson Road resident Tom Doumit said last week that erosion is continuing to occur, and parts of the pavement are sloughing into the river. "We're losing more of the road," he said. "It's a serious concern." Ringen said he had spoken with the state Department of Fish...
In a special meeting last Friday, the Cathlamet Town Council voted unanimously to complete design of a new waste water treatment plant that could cost $13 million. Council members and consulting engineers from Gray and Osborne, Inc., reviewed the history of plant design selection process and ruled out alternatives such as trying to refurbish the current sewage treatment lagoons or building the new plant at the current sewage plant site. The engineers said they will have design documents ready for a possible call for bids and start of...
To The Eagle: Boy, oh boy, are we ever in the big time now! Just think of it - our very own commissioners and sheriff negotiating behind closed doors on a matter of national security. Heady stuff, but it gets a little complicated for some of us simple country folk to sort out. Here's a stab at it: Kristin Lee writes a letter warning us that all these secret security negotiations may not be a perfectly wonderful idea; in fact, could be a financial and environmental disaster. Then the sheriff and commissioners come out of their secret session...
To The Eagle: Did you know that 1.5 million teens experience abuse in their relationships each year? That equals roughly one in three teens becoming victim to verbal, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. In fact, females between 16 and 24 experience the highest rates of relationship violence. Teen relationships are just as important and complex as those of adults. They are not just "puppy love" or "kids being kids." Abuse in teen relationships is not just unhealthy; it can be scary and very dangerous. Research shows that it has a major impact...
To The Eagle: I wish to disagree respectfully with Richard Erickson’s assertion that all of us who have to work for a living and are raising children here hope for the LNG plant to be built. Somehow left out of the discussion are the jobs which will be negatively impacted by an LNG plant at Bradwood. I happen to have one. I have earned a living as a kayak guide out of Skamokawa since 1998. I’m currently part owner of Columbia River Kayaking, along with six other local guides. My job may be modest compared to a potential security position wit...
To The Eagle: Judging by his letter to The Eagle last week, Richard Erickson would have us believe that anyone opposed to NorthernStar’s planned Bradwood Landing LNG facility is the enemy of all economic development in Wahkiakum County. Don’t fall for the false dichotomy. In fact, such a facility would suppress property values, hinder tourism and crimp the steady flow of well-heeled retirees into the area– negative impacts that, in my view, far outweigh the job creation proponents of the LNG project forecast should it move forward. Mr. Erick...
