  • Mules rough up Comets

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 14, 2011

Defense was a chore for the Comets as they committed eight errors that led to many of the Mules’ runs. However, the Mules did their part at the plate as well, tallying 12 hits and swiping a ridiculous 17 bases. The Mules also took advantage of five walks and three hit batters. Brandon Fudge led the charge offensively, going three for four with a double, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and...

  • Hosanna Musicale Sunday at 2 p.m.

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 14, 2011

DIFFERENT DAYS--As the week began, it was absolutely miserable in West Valley, with rain coming down so hard on Sunday night that I wondered if I should be building an ark! However, it was great to see the work week begin with sunshine, as Monday was great, albeit windy, but that's okay, as at least we were able to let things dry out a little bit and the wind sometimes helps that happen a little faster. With a couple of nice days to follow, we are all quite pleased as the grass seems to grow faster than we can get the lawn mower filled up, so...

Members of the boards of commissioners of Wahkiakum County and Port District No. 2 on Tuesday agreed to consider how they might continue to maintain channel marker buoys on Grays Bay. The channel is not part of a system maintained by the US Coast Guard. A private towboat company once maintained channel buoys but pulled them when they ceased operating from Deep River. In response to citizen input about eight years ago, Port 2 agreed to install the buoys, and the county agreed to contribute $7,000 for the project. Local boaters marked the...

  • Commission to consider more flood warning

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 14, 2011

How much warning of potential flooding do residents of Wahkiakum County's low lying areas need? County officials are going to analyze the potential benefit of installing a system that would remotely monitor water levels and report fluctuations by radio to a computer which would post the information on a website and notify emergency management officials of potential flooding. Ron Kimmel, a retired naval officer and amateur radio enthusiast who has been working with the sheriff's office on emergency management issues, brought the idea to the...

  • Sheriff's tsunami reaction appropriate

    Apr 14, 2011

Editor's note: We have corrected typographical errors in this letter since it was first posted. To The Eagle: In response to the article by Ruby Murray entitled "Questions continue on tsunami warning" (The Eagle, 4/7/11), I would be interested in knowing how many people on the island or lowlying areas were actually panicking the night and early morning of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. You really have to ask those residents why they didn't take the initiative and evacuate their homes on their own if they were having a sleepless night...

I am studying three new patterns that I think would be fun for the gaming crowd. If you have a horse gate key and would like to volunteer to run the patterns in...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 14, 2011

Two recent emergencies have highlighted the decline in Wahkiakum County's emergency management system. In a "hotwash" review of responses to the March tsunami and last week's closure of SR 4 because of a landslide, officials talked about the challenges of finding information about the incidents and the challenges of communicating that information with each other and with the public. They identified several problems: Only certain officials can update the county's website and Facebook page, and they can do it only form certain computers....
