  • Mules slide past Tigers, Trojans

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 24, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team took a small step in the right direction this past week following back-to-back home upsets the week prior as the team buckled down to pick up a pair of league victories on the road. Last Wednesday, the Mules travelled to Napavine to face a struggling Tigers team, but it was the Mules who did a lot of the struggling early. After one quarter of play, the Mules were still stuck with a goose egg on the scoreboard, trailing 13-0 to the Tigers. Over the next three quarters, though, the Mules finally got into a...

On Tuesday the Lady Mules suffered a frustrating 49-33 loss to visiting Onalaska. “Our offense just wasn’t there tonight,” said Coach Rob Garrett. “We’ve got to be able to score. Onalaska plays tough defense.” Haylee Budd scored seven points for the Mules, Sam Boyce six, Kaylee Bryant and Tori Wegdahl five apiece; Maya Stanley and Hailey Quigley tossed in four, and Baylee Olsen had two. Tori Wegdah...

  • Five Mule wrestlers medal at Rubber Chicken

    Jan 24, 2013

Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey For the regular season grand finale, the Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers were poised to head to Kalama for the famous Rubber Chicken. However the weekend at Hoquiam had a negative side effect, and coming off a week of illness, the team was only able to field a partial lineup of nine wrestlers ready for battle. Of those nine, five were able to earn their way onto the victor's stand. This week’s lone Mule in a finals singlet was junior Jesús Crawford (132). Jesús had recently come down from 138 and was able t...

  • Sons of Norway celebrates 118 years

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 24, 2013

BITTER COLD--This past week has been an extremely cold one around our area with temperatures in the low 20's and slick roads and icy ponds everywhere. We had folks in the ditch or doing a dance on the highways, so it was definitely a challenging week to stay on the road and to stay warm. Depending on what weather report you listen to, we could be in for some more freezing rain or snow, so be careful out there. For your own safety, please turn on those headlights as foggy conditions make the visibility of your car extremely difficult. SPECIAL...

  • DNR: Timber harvest should yield county $1.2 million this year

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 24, 2013

The figure is in line with the $1.26 million the board of commissioners listed in their 2013 county budget. Eric Wisch, regional manager for the state Department of Natural Resources, and Steve Ogden, district manager, presented an update revenue report on Tuesday. In 2012, the county received almost $1.89 million, $600,000 over the figure the commissioners expected for 2012. The major timber sale of the year, Hayduke Sorts,...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 24, 2013

In other action, the council awarded a bid for remodeling the old town hall and library; the council upheld a variance granted by the town board of adjustment; the council gave conditioned approval to a new ordinance regulating signs, and the council rejected an ordinance of and a resolution authorizing the mayor to contract for forestry consulting services. For almost a year, Helping Hands Food Bank directors have been...

  • Why should anyone be surprised?

    Jan 24, 2013

To The Eagle: "For the government to permit banks to issue money, borrow that money, and pay interest on it is idiotic!" --Bill Hixon. Requiring commercial gillnet fishermen to try to fish in a little puddle is idiotic! It would be something akin to requiring that sport fishermen only be allowed to fish from port district docks, not floats, docks where ships tie up. That, too, would be idiotic! Giving the Army Corps of Engineers a pass on dealing with the increased erosion on the Steamboat Slough dike caused by their projects and actions is...
