Ah, New Year's Day is behind us but it’s not too late to make resolutions or work toward completing those already made. One of my resolutions is to read a couple of good books. Winter is an ideal time to read books that will enrich my mind and give me diverse ideas that I can mull over when I get too busy in the summer to read. I am more inclined to read books about food than novels. I like to learn more about industrial farming, sustainable agriculture, and our political food history. There is much to learn about the social, ethical and e...
The Washington State Patrol has seen a significant reduction in the number of state route fatality collisions in Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties over a four year time period, working towards Target Zero, Washington State’s goal of zero traffic fatalities by the year 2030. After setting a record of zero fatality collisions on state highways within the two counties for over 17 months, there was one reported fatality collision during August 2008 in Pacific County on State Route 401 at S. Valley Road – where speed, DUI, and use of a s...
It’s been a chilly week but that hasn’t stopped us pushing forward with the flood cleanup down at the fairgrounds. We have an excellent crew and are determined to restore the fairgrounds back to its former glory. I must say a big thank you to the county commissioners who have been very supportive. Work will soon start on the clearing of the Commercial Building so things are looking very positive. There is a long road ahead but the fair board and I are committed to ensuring we have a 101st fair. If you’re looking for something to do this Valen...
Monday’s power outage was due to a tree down in Rainier, Oregon, PUD Manager Dave Tramblie reported this week. The power was restored quickly and no crews were needed, he said. During the floods earlier this month, he said, crews noticed significant water loss on the Westend. After an investigation, a leak was found in the riverbed near the Western Wahkiakum Water System (WWWS) pumping station. Another leak was found near the Grays River Hatchery on Shannon Road. Both leaks have been repaired. Auditor Erin Wilson told the board that c...

Last week, the Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team competed in back to back competition. On Wednesday, the Mules traveled to Adna High School to take part in a double dual versus Ocosta and North Beach, and on Thursday the Mules hosted three schools in an exhibition. The Mule wrestlers lost both of their duals versus Ocosta and North Beach with a squad that was missing three key wrestlers in match-ups that would have made the difference, said Coach John Hannah. "The three wrestlers were out of action due to illnesses and other priorities, Hannah...

The fight over a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Bradwood may be headed to court. On January 15, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission upheld the approval it gave September 18 to the proposed Bradwood Landing Terminal. A FERC announcement said the commission denied requests by interveners to rehear the Bradwood project, stating that its decision “does not impact any substantive determinations that need to be made by states” under federal statutes. “Since construction cannot start until all necessary authorizations are obtai...
The Wahkiakum Lady Mule girls basketball team lost 40-37 to Toutle Lake last Saturday and swamped Adna 58-38 in Central League action this past week. The Mules led 17-7 after one quarter, 24-14 at halftime and 38-16 after three quarters. Jordyn Wirkkala led the charge with 19 points. Shelby Deaton scored 10, Evelyn Clark and...
