    Jan 21, 2010

The Mule wrestling team competed in two events last week. On Wednesday the Mules traveled to Ocosta High School in Westport for a district seeding competition, and then traveled to Clatskanie to take place in their first annual Clatskanie Invitational. At the Ocosta meet the Mules competed in 12 matches and won 10 of them. The Mules gained valuable seeding criteria for the district tournament that takes place the first Saturday of February. "Overall we wrestled great," said head coach John...

  • Mules lose to Tigers, dump Knights, Ducks

    Jan 21, 2010

One day you're up; the next day you're down. The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball game found itself in the reverse of that observation this past week. Last Thursday the Mules lost 57-42 at home to the Napavine Tigers. The loss dropped them out of first place in the Central League. Napavine led a defensive ball game 23-22 at halftime. The Mules took a brief lead in the third quarter, but the lid went on the basket; the Mule offense stalled, and the Tigers pulled away to win. Cody Olsen led the Mule scoring with 15 points. Ty Bain and Wyatt Parker...

  • Winds cause power outage in valley

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 21, 2010

WILD WEATHER--We started off this week with quite a storm as the rains came pounding down and hit my front windows in a fury and the winds just roared down the valley and sent the trees in a frenzied dance. While most seemed to have escaped any problems, those of us living in West Valley found ourselves in the dark about midnight Sunday. Our new overhead power lines were no match for a big tree which came across the road, into the lines and through our fence. Ah…such is life in the country. But all was well after about five hours of quiet. W...

  • Washington, Oregon traffic laws differ

    Stevan Morgain|Jan 21, 2010

Wahkiakum drivers need to be aware of the new driving laws that took effect in Oregon January 1. Some of the new laws are quite strict. One law in particular has changed and is yet to be referenced in the Oregon Driver Manual and has to be broken first before one realizes there is such a law. The law most Washingtonians could get nabbed for is Oregon’s new “hands free” wireless law. Under the wireless hands-free law, if you are over the age of 18, you may use a wireless device in conjunction with a hands free accessory that allows you to keep...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 21, 2010

Voters in the Wahkiakum and Naselle/Grays River Valley school districts will soon find election ballots in their mail. The boards of directors of each district are asking voters to renew special levies which they use to cover program expenses not covered by state and federal funding. School districts ask voters to approve special levies to cover expenses not covered by state or federal sources. These include, but are not limited to: --repair and maintenance of facilities; --salaries and benefits for coaches and advisors of extracurricular activ...

  • SAR presents the 9 rules for survival

    Wah. Co. Search & Rescue|Jan 21, 2010

The following information is provided by Gary O’Brien, Search and Rescue British Columbia. Child survival needs adult assistance. You can help children learn what to do if they get lost in the woods, by discussing and practicing the "rules for survival." Nobody ever expects to get lost, but it happens. Hopefully, this information will insure a safe return of your child should this misfortune ever occur. The rules are presented in a way which children can understand. A definition of survival: staying warm and dry, while waiting to be found. 1...

  • Officials spar over bill, resolutions

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 21, 2010

Taxpayers might not realize the good news, but Wahkiakum County hasn't set tax levies for this year. That should change early today (Thursday) when the commissioners reconvene a recessed meeting. Commissioners received resolutions to set the levies for the year at their Tuesday meeting, but Commissioner Lisa Marsyla, who had just returned from vacation, said she wanted to check the figures. The commissioners are shifting $200,000 from the county road levy to the Current Expense Fund, and when Marsyla learned Treasure Paula Holloway hadn't seen...

  • County, WDFW seek chum program

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 21, 2010

The Elochoman Salmon hatchery could again produce fish under a plan discussed Tuesday by local and state officials. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) closed the hatchery in 2009 as part of a plan to eliminate hatchery reared salmon from tributaries of the lower Columbia River. However, it might be possible to create a chum salmon spawning and rearing station at the Elochoman Hatchery, said WDFW Regional Fish Program Manager Pat Frazier and Fish Biologist Bryce Glaser. The...

  • Council works on library issues

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 21, 2010

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council worked on a lot of issues pertaining to the town library when they met Tuesday. The good news is that new Mayor George Wehrfritz has arranged for Architects Without Borders to undertake a project to create a long-range development concept for the library and adjacent town facilities. The pro bono work would cost the town little or nothing. The group will select a team and come to Cathlamet in early February for a public meeting to explain the project and gather input. The bad news is that because projects...

  • Complexities of timber markets sway recovery

    Stevan Morgain|Jan 21, 2010

The Washington Department of Natural Resources says the worst may be over for beleaguered Northwest sawmills and timber companies. In a report released this past September, the DNR said Wahkiakum’s timber sales hit bottom in the last quarter of 2009. The DNR is now saying the industry can look forward to slow but steady growth over the next two years. The recovery however depends on a huge number of factors starting with employment and interest rates. Work Source of Washington says u...

  • Let someone else do the dirty work

    Jan 21, 2010

To The Eagle: It is beyond disturbing to me and others that the ongoing meetings, both secret and private, between NorthernStar, Fred Johnson, David Goodroe, Sheriff Bardsley, the county commissioners and others have been taking place. Fred Johnson has already signed a non-disclosure agreement with them; David Goodroe wants to turn our Elochoman Marina into a base for NorthernStar's armed vessels; Sheriff Bardsley has been negotiating a contract and to quote Lisa Marsyla at a meeting September 15, she had met with William Garrett of...
