  • Northwest Voices event to feature Poet Tod Marshall

    Lower Columbia College has announced that Tod Marshall will be featured at the January 25 Northwest Voices event in Longview. First, Marshall will conduct a writing workshop from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in Main 145 on the Lower Columbia College campus. From 7:00-8:00 p.m., he will hold a reading at the Longview Public Library.   • Master Hunter Permit Program will accept applications through Feb. 15

    The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will accept applications for its Master Hunter Permit Program through Feb. 15. The program is designed to promote safe, lawful and ethical hunting, and to strengthen Washington's hunting heritage and conservation ethic. WDFW enlists master hunters for controlled hunts to remove problem animals that damage property. The owner, Kurt Williams, grew up in Cathlamet, giving him a soft spot for our community. He welcomed the idea of having our kids tour his company.     On February 16 at 6:00 p.m., Gary Fredricks and Sheila Gray, Washington State University faculty, will discuss how to test soils and show how to help poor soils become more productive. Participants will receive a Rapitest soil test kit to check soil samples from their gardens for fertility. Cost for the course is $25 per family.     Photos and story by Diana Zimmerman Last Thursday, Peyton Souvenir set the new record at Wahkiakum High School for most points scored by a single player in a basketball game, boys or girls. She not only beat the record of 41, set by Michelle Thomas in 1985, she topped Cody Olsen's 43 points against Clatskanie in 2010.     The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team took two more hits this week with losses to Rainer and Onalaska, bringing their record to 2-7 league and 5-8 overall.
