On January 14 the Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers traveled up to Hoquiam for their girls and boys team tournaments. "Hoquiam is a larger school, and the competition was fierce this year," said Mule Coach Matt Stacey. "Many wrestlers first had to win a pig tail match just to enter the tournament." Arial Snodgrass was the Mules' lone contender in the girls division. After a tough day of wrestling, she earned fourth place in the girls' 145 bracket. Her next girls tournament will be districts on February 4 at Heritage High School. This begins the final...
Last Wednesday night’s game against the Pe Ell Trojans was one that Coach Bill Olsen and his staff hope was just a fluke, a one-time occurrence resulting from the absence of senior and leading scorer Wyatt Parker (out - coach’s decision). Despite pulling out a 60-46 victory over the Trojans, the Mules turned in their worst performance of the 2011/2012 season with 19 turnovers, most unforced. The Mules’ inside game pulled off one of its best performances of the year, however, with Brett Chaput netting a season-high 19 points and Yannik Kruet...
The Wahkiakum Mule boys Tuesday night game at Winlock was postponed due to snow. The Mules will make up the game on Saturday, 3 p.m. The Wahkiakum Lady Mules were scheduled to play last night (Wednesday) at Winlock, but that game was cancelled. Athletic Director Marc Niemeyer had announced that if the game were postponed because of weather, it would be played Saturday when the Mule boys make up a postponed game at Winlock, but that hadn't been confirmed when The Eagle went to press. The Thomas Middle School Warriors game Tuesday home game with...
IT'S SNOW TIME!--The big news since Saturday night has been the snow! It began falling around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and as I begin writing this column, the snow is still coming down in West Valley. The white-out conditions on this Martin Luther King Day have made for some very pretty photos as everything is now under a nice, new blanket of white. With temperatures in the 20s on Sunday night, the new flakes gave us white roads again, and then the several hours of new snowfall began to add up quickly. The birds were not too impressed and...

(Editor's note: Our original headline had the incorrect date for a PUD meeting planned in Rosburg to consider a time for meetings in the Westend. The correct date is Feb. 21) The Wahkiakum County Public Utility District board met Tuesday to conduct routine business. General Manager Dave Tramblie received a letter from the union which opens contract negotiation. An initial meeting may be held in mid-February, he said. The board made plans to hold their next regular meeting at the Rosburg Hall on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and to decide after that what...
Commissioners of Port District No. 2 reviewed their contract for legal services and discussed other business when they met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday. Attorney Tim Hanigan requested the commission consider updating their contract for legal services. Neither his office nor port staff can find a copy of the original contract, which goes back to the port's formation in the 1960s. Commissioner Kayrene Gilbertsen suggested the commission could issue a request for proposals and see if other attorneys are interested in working with the...
Wahkiakum County officials are continuing to develop their process for filling the vacant position of director of the Department of Health and Human Services. Commissioners and other officials met last week with heads of health and human services of Cowlitz, Clark and Skamania counties to get their input. Next week, they'll meet with representatives of the state Department of Health. On Tuesday, the board passed Commissioner Lisa Marsyla's motion to make the position of county Public Health Nurse a full time position. Marsyla stated that the...
Wahkiakum County officials are looking for a way to get around a major road construction project at the end of East Valley Road this summer. Storms in early 2009 led to a significant settling of the road, and a long stretch has been limited to one-lane traffic since then. The county road crew periodically has to smooth out areas where it settles, said Public Works Director Pete Ringen. The easiest way to accomplish the settlement project would be to close the road and allow the contractor to dig out the soft material and place a hard base....
By a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners approved payment of a $7,720 bill for a contractor's assistance to the county assessor's office. The payment went to Hagen and Son, LLC, for services dating back to July, 2011. Assessor Bill Coons used the firm to provide assistance in getting valuations done by deadline. Commissioners paid the bill unhappily. They and Coons had gone back and forth last year over funding for extra help, and when the commission refused to give Coons the funding he wanted, he said he would engage a contractor....

The bill also allows PUDs and rural port districts to provide wholesale telecommunications services in areas adjacent to their district, and authorizes cities and towns to provide telecommunications services to their residents. Giving PUDs or ports the ability to provide retail services, including...

To The Eagle: Spanning several years of reading The Eagle, I have been introduced to and have come to admire the Finns of Wahkiakum from afar. I do have one Finnish friend, a retired medical assistant from Astoria, living near her family in Blaine. What do I conclude about these folks of Finnish ancestry? Well, they are perseverant, pragmatic problem-solvers, socially conscious, keen on preserving their heritage, and light-hearted towards music, dance, learning enjoyment and the arts. I might have guessed from the evolving computer center at...
To The Eagle: Ah, the crosses we of the Conservative Branch must bear! Daring to mount a defense from criticisms by our Eagle editorial board, I am then skewered by one of my heroes Poul Toftemark, a leading member of the merry band who have worked tirelessly to keep the Westend of our county somewhat above high tide, defending it from the depredations of the Columbia Land Trust. So I hasten to apologize for any disinformation I may have disseminated and explain how that may have come about. "Conservative Branch" is nomenclature invented by...

It’s cold and snowing, yet wintertime projects at the fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our continuing projects has been to try to make all of our buildings wheelchair accessible. Last summer we built a goat, sheep and pig barn complete with animal pens, built out of the materials we had available. We built the barn on a concrete slab that was designed for a former building. The concrete slab had some dirt areas where we needed to have an aisle, these dirt areas made maneuvering through the barn difficult. T...

What a gorgeous winter wonderland to wake up to this past weekend. I’m sure not everyone thought of it that way, especially if they had to drive to work. Walking in the snow always brings back childhood memories of growing up in Maine. The dogs are in heaven with all the white fluffy stuff to bounce around and roll in. The chickens—not so much. They seem content to stay in the warm henhouse, much like most of us humans who curl up in our warm homes. It looks like the weather will take a wet turn for the rest of the week and probably w...
