With stories of disenfranchised voters coming out of Georgia, North Dakota, Kansas, and Texas, there has been an uptick of concern about voting procedures even from voters in Wahkiakum County. The Wahkiakum County Auditor's Office follows very strict guidelines provided by the Washington Secretary of State during the election. The mail has been picked up each day since the ballots were mailed and the ballot box in the office is emptied daily at about the same time. The people who deliver the...

To The Eagle: Volunteers contribute knowledge, experience, energy, and passion every day in our community. Some are highly visible, while others quietly work behind the scenes. Most don’t seek recognition because they find satisfaction in knowing their efforts do indeed make a difference. On Saturday, October 27th more than 30 volunteers turned out for Tidy Up the Town and took on five Fall clean-up projects for National Make A Difference Day. The Pioneer Community Association wants to extend a special thanks to Scott Anderson with Anderson S...

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife staff completed a draft evaluation of the Columbia River Basin Salmon Management Policy that was enacted to assure recreational anglers would receive a larger portion of the non-tribal harvest allocation of salmon and steelhead and that removed commercial gillnetters from the mainstem of the river. The evaluation determined that the large economic benefits expected from the policy, also known as Columbia River harvest reform and orginally inspired by former Oregon governor John Kitzhaber, have not...
OFF AND ON--The weather this past weekend was a bit of a mix, as we had some rain, some breezy times, some cloudy times and even some sunshine, so it just depended on where you were and at what time you were there, as to what kind of weather you were experiencing. Nothing like the Pacific Northwest Fall routine! I had heard we were in for an "atomospheric river" coming our way, but it didn't rain nearly as much as I thought it was going to. We were still over the inch mark several days but considering we've seen much worse, that was just...

Halloween in western Wahkiakum County is unique from the rest of the state as well as the country. At Johnson Park's haunted gathering, it was anything but scary. The adults were having as much fun as the children. Wes and Shonda Ware worked hard in the cafeteria kitchen preparing free hotdogs, chips, cookies, punch, and coffee while the children watched movies. The difference is that in the bigger cities there is a lot of vandalism and pranks, whereas in Rosburg there were only smiling faces. T...

The Wahkiakum County Historical Society Museum faces an uncertain future if they can't find some volunteers. "Right now, the 10 member board is down to six and some of them are struggling with health issues," said Kari Kandoll, who began volunteering at the museum in 2007 and became the curator in 2009. A curator really shouldn't be on the board, Kandoll noted, but she is. She's needed. When she started in 2007, she was indexing articles from old newspapers. She became fascinated by the stories...
