At the last Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 monthly meeting, the winners of the 2024 Post Raffle were drawn. Jane Kelsy of Rosburg won a Quilt, Carol Wegdahl of Cathlamet won a Sling Shot Rifle, Sulema Zerr of Puget Island won a Camp Box and Rose Long of Long Beach won a Hunting Bow. We anticipate having another raffle this year beginning in May and will be offering a Marlin 45-70 cal., model #1894G, lever action rifle. The Senior Friendship Group started as a Facebook Page to allow Wahkiakum seniors to make connections and new friends. Some seniors have mobility issues and have difficulty getting out and about, and this group gave them an online place to meet, chat, answer daily questions, and share photos. Soon, Pastor Jeff at the Lutheran Church offered the downstairs as a place for the group members to fellowship in person. I am writing my column this week from Littleton Colorado. I’m spending the week visiting my family and enjoying time with my 9-month-old grandson. Mid December’s high tide, rain and high winds combined to move a boat housing structure off its moorings and afloat on Deep River. The structure had been a many decades old fixture on Deep River that once served as a floating garage for the gillnet boat owned and operated by Walter Cato. Once afloat, the wind and incoming tide sent the structure toward the area that was once the town of Deep River. 8 was a whirlwind year for Wahkiakum Animal Advocates Group (WAAG). we are proud to share some highlights of a remarkable year. Thanks to the support of our donors, volunteers, and community partners, WAAG was able to continue making a difference in our community. The Clatskanie High School girls basketball team saw its season-high, six-game winning streak come to an end in Cloverdale Monday night, falling 29-28 to Nestucca. The tone for a defensive battle was set early, as the teams scored a combined 17 points in the first half. The Clatskanie High School boys basketball team had a couple of close losses on the road this week, falling 30-29 at Vernonia last Friday, Jan. 10 and coming up two points short to Nestucca in Cloverdale on Monday, Jan. 13.
