The ferry has now moved to Langley where it will undergo sea trials. Several local officials and residents made the journey to witness the event including county Commissioners Blair Brady and Mike Backman, Public Works Director Pete Ringen, state Representative Dean Takko and ferry skipper Lamar Blix and his family. "Yes, the christening was a very...

  • Island native recalls his past

Art Vik, who will be 100 years old in September, lives in a pleasant little one room house on the southeast side of Puget Island with a plump little Dachshund named Pepe. Large picture windows open up to the Columbia where he can watch the ships pass and try to divine the mysterious patterns in a flock of scaups. "I built this as a garage but I hardly ever used it," Vik said of his cosy home. "I moved it back to the barn to keep my tractors in. I didn't need it so I moved it out here and put it...

  • Commission planning steps for Sunny Sands beach nourishment

    Rick Nelson|Jan 15, 2015

Wahkiakum County officials are planning to work with other local agencies and the US Army Corps of Engineers to establish a continuing beach nourishment program for Puget Island. Erosion is again threatening waterfront homes on East Sunny Sands Road, and the Columbia continues to erode the North Welcome Slough Road dike and also along Ohrberg’s Beach. County Commissioner Dan Cothren on Monday described the process to include the areas in the dredged sand disposal sites at a meeting with Sunny Sands residents, and Tuesday, he reviewed the p...

  • Attempt to stem erosion doesn't work

    Jan 15, 2015

To The Eagle: In response to the two previous letters about my comments on the Watson house being in danger of being swallowed up by the encroaching Columbia River, I want to thank the writers for validating my point that putting sand on the beach in a never-ending attempt to stem the erosion simply does not work. A solution exists: Since all the land covered by dredge spoil is claimed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), it should be the legal responsibility of that agency to protect the buildings on it. They claim th...

  • East coast resident speaks to legal conflict

    Jan 15, 2015

To The Eagle: New Jersey's system of medical marijuana regulation, which requires all patients obtain a state-issued patient identification card to possess and purchase medical marijuana, in tracked sales, is unconstitutional. Federal law still criminalizes marijuana. New Jersey medical marijuana patients must not be forced to incriminate themselves federally in order to obtain their medicine and be protected from prosecution under state medical marijuana statutes. In 1969, the United States Supreme Court struck down the federal Marijuana Tax...

  • Living Well in Wahkiakum County

    Terrie Howell, Wahkiakum Community Outreach|Jan 15, 2015

Wahkiakum Health and Human Services is gearing up for the annual Point in Time Count on January 29th, 2015. What is the Point in Time Count? Its one day in January every year that every county in the State of Washington counts the homeless within their county. Homelessness is everywhere and Wahkiakum County is not exempt. A recognition of the instability of an individual’s living arrangements is critical in defining the term homeless. There is more than one official definition of homelessness. Health centers funded by the U.S. Department of H...

  • K-12: Expensive focus for 2015 legislature

Cooper Inveen, Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, Olympia News Bureau|Jan 15, 2015

OLYMPIA--Washington’s lawmakers have opened this year’s legislative session amid predictions of a long and contentious debate focused on budget and tax votes for the K-12 education system. Lawmakers are confronted with a mountain of expensive problems to solve, ranging from transportation to mental health. But education funding is pivotal. The Washington Supreme Court held the Legislature in contempt last year for engaging in “an ongoing violation of its constitutional duty to K-12 children,” by not adequately funding public education. Combine...

  • Follow-up bills set for marijuana

Cooper Inveen, Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, Olympia News Bureau|Jan 15, 2015

By Cooper Inveen, Washington Newspaper Publisher Association Olympia News Bureau OLYMPIA--Two years after Washington voters ended pot prohibition lawmakers are wading through a thicket of proposed reforms that aim to stabilize an industry struggling to get off the ground. “Right now I call it the wild, wild west,” Senate Democratic Leader Sharon Nelson, D-Maury Island, said during Thursday’s annual Associated Press Legislative Preview. “We’ve got incongruities in this law that we need to solve.” With seven new cannabis-related bills pre-f...

  • Correction/Clarification

    Jan 15, 2015

In last week's article about the annual bird count, a statement was incorrectly attributed to Andrew Emlen, regarding “120 species including two winter vagrants, the Snowy Egret and the Cedar waxwing.” They were not vagrants but birds from count week, or birds that were not seen on count day but are regular species in the area and were seen during the week of the event and thus can be counted....

  • Big decisions in store for fairgrounds property

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 15, 2015

ANOTHER WEEK--By the looks of it, this year is going to fly by like the last one. We have spent this past week in a virtual fog as both evenings and mornings were thick with the stuff, at least down this way. Our soggy fields seem to "grow" the fog and there were only hours between the morning fog and the evening fog, as most of the time, the evening fog was showing up in the late afternoon, so we were "in a fog" most of the time. The dangerous part of that was that the deer and elk seemed to be using it as a time to cross the roadways, which...

  • GR Valley Center has new coordinator

    Jan 15, 2015

News from Naselle: Looks like the biggest news from Naselle this week comes in the fact that SR 4 now has a detour allowing folks to eliminate a long drive in order to get to the coast. If you still have questions about the roads and detours, I’m sure you could contact the Pacific County Sheriff’s office or Washington State Patrol. It looks like an expensive fix to take care of the washout that occurred during our last rain event. Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week includes: Friday, JV girls basketball with Astoria at 3:30 p....

  • New foundation to support EMS and volunteers

    Jan 15, 2015

The Grays River Fire and Ambulance support foundation is off to a great start thanks to a big boost in its initial fundraising efforts from Wahkiakum West. The locally owned telecommunications company has long been a supporter of Wahkiakum county’s all-volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Services. When a group of volunteers decided to start a new effort to support services for those volunteers, Wahkiakum West stepped up with a $500 donation. When added to the individual donations received thus far, the foundation finished 2014 with about $...

  • N/GRV school district seeks special levy

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 15, 2015

The Naselle/Grays River Valley School District will have a replacement maintenance and operations levy on the ballot coming out on January 23. The ballots are due on February 10, and the levy requires a simple majority to pass. “It’s kind of a misnomer that they call it a maintenance and operations levy,” said district Superintendent Lisa Nelson. “To me that implies painting and window washing, but it’s really maintenance of existing programs. Some districts have begun to change the language...

Martin and his wife, Jill, spent a long time trying to find the right replacement and finally Blankenship came along. "We'd been looking for someone for about a year," Martin said. "We spoke with several people, but we didn't feel that they had the right ideas in mind for the community so we waited to find the right person. We were looking for someone who wanted...
