January 7 found the Mules wrestling team competing in two different tournaments. The majority of the team went across to Coulee City to wrestle at the ACH tournament. A few of the Mule wrestlers stayed home to compete at the Kelso’s JV & Lady’s tournament. Jesus Crawford (126) and Trystan Mendez (152) both chose to stay closer to home and compete, and both fought hard coming through with a pair of second place medals. The nine Mules who crossed the mountains came in contact with some solid competition from a variety of east side teams and cam...

The Mules displayed one of their best all-around performances of the year last Wednesday night in their 64-32 rout of the Napavine Tigers. The Mules held the Tigers scoreless for the first five minutes of the game. The Mule defense never let up and forced a number of turnovers that led to easy transitional scores while making it difficult for the Tigers to get anything going on offense. The Mule offense was just the opposite as they were firing on all cylinders, hitting 50 percent of their two-point tries, 75 percent from the line and 10 of 29...
NICE BEGINNING--As this week began, we had some heavy fog but with the sun shining all above us, we knew it was going to turn out nice, so last Sunday was just terrific. Seeing that big ole ball of sunshine was great and it felt good as I stood in front of the window and soaked in a little vitamin D. With the rain and clouds we've been having lately, that was a nice treat. By nightfall, it was clear and nice out, albeit a bit nippy, as it got down in the 30s. On Monday, we saw a lot of soaker mist which came down most of the day and it was...

Emergency supplies to protect property from flooding are available at fire stations through the county, Wahkiakum’s Department of Emergency Management Coordinator Beau Renfro said. Renfro has both sand and sand bags available, but residents must bring their own shovels. “Those have disappeared too quickly in the past,” Renfro said. “The use of sand bags is a centuries old tried and true method of flood fighting,” according to the US Corps of Engineers Northwestern Division brochure available at the sites. The brochure contains strategie...
At present, 208 Wahkiakum County residents have taken advantage of an Emergency Community Notification System offered through the Wahkiakum’s Sheriff’s Office, Department of Emergency Management, that sends emergency phone calls to their cell phones. “We want to encourage everybody to sign up, so we can get a hold of everyone in the event of an emergency,” said Beau Renfro, coordinator of Wahkiakum County’s Department of Emergency Management. Wahkiakum County residents can be part of the county’s emergency community warning system that sends...
Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to hold a public hearing on the sale of a Puget Island farm property seized from a Vancouver man convicted of drug charges. The board also held a broad discussion with citizens urging commissioners to cut other county services before cutting the sheriff's department any more. Officers seized the property on East Birnie Slough Road earlier this year. The owner was charged with manufacturing marijuana in Clark County; he pled guilty to diverting electricity around a meter in Wahkiakum County. The...
Wahkiakum County commissioners adopted an ordinance Tuesday that will lower the speed limit on the Elochoman Valley Road from SR 4 to Family Camp Road later this year. Valley resident Mike Mouliot had asked the board last year to consider the move. He said population growth had increased the number of driveways and drivers in the lower portion of the valley, and safety was becoming an issue. Commissioners asked Public Works Director Pete Ringen to prepare an engineering and traffic inspection of the road. Ringen presented the report in...
A Vancouver woman has filed a $200,000 claim against Wahkiakum County for the slaying of her son by a Cowlitz County man. The victim, 26-year-old Jeremy McLean, had been shot four times in the head. He was found in the Columbia River at Willow Grove near Longview on December 31, 2008. McLean had been a confidential informant working for the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Narcotics Task Force (NTF). His testimony helped send William Reagan to jail on trafficking charges in 2008. While on pre-trial release, Reagan got an aquaintance to lure McLean to a...
To The Eagle: Just finished reading the paper, thanks, I enjoy reading it. I also enjoy the fact that pretty much anyone is allowed to write in this space, love free speech and a way to bring it to an audience. On that note, I need to express my thoughts on an editorial sent by a ‘conservative branch’ person. Some of the criticism of our President is appropriate, while most is definitely not. The Wall Street bailout was a 2008 Bush thing, not Obama, right or wrong. Personally I don’t think any bank or such should be propped up to cover their...

We had a wonderful surprise visit from our daughter and son-in-law when they showed up on Saturday. They decided to make the trip to pick up some firewood and deliver a sample of some of their latest brewed beer. We certainly enjoyed the visit and the nice weather to boot. This week I will fill out the paperwork to apply for state funding for the Wahkiakum County Fair. Let’s all send positive thoughts towards Olympia as Washington State budgets are getting close to being finalized. County fair funding may or may not be included in the state budget. Letters asking for fair funding support have been sent to Senator Brian Hatfield, and Representatives Brian Blake and Dean Takko. I have done my best to make each of them understand that the Wahkiakum County Fair is very important to our community. I hope you will a...
