The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to request membership in the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments and listened to reports from the general manager and auditor at their first meeting of the new year last Wednesday. General Manager Dave Tramblie reported that the PUD took advantage of some recent foggy, cold weather to pull out a rarely used infrared camera to inspect substations at both ends of the county as well as their main feeders. They found no...
Wahkiakum County commissioners stepped back from selling a house in Cathlamet and explored issues regarding burgeoning technology costs when they met Tuesday. In a public hearing about the board's proposal to declare the Johnson House surplus and put it up for sale, commissioners heard comments that caused them to reconsider the sale. The house had been used by Health and Human Services until the county acquired the former United Church of Christ building, now called the Hope House. Commissioners had suggested the county would be better off to...
Gov. Jay Inslee appointed Donald J. Richter to Pacific and Wahkiakum County Superior Court on Dec. 18. He replaces Judge Doug Goelz, who will retired at the end of the year. Richter spent the past four and a half years as a deputy county prosecutor in Pacific and Cowlitz Counties, most recently working as the chief deputy prosecutor in Pacific County. An announcement from the governor's office said that in his current role, Richter "has helped stand up and support a successful drug court that...
When representatives of local governmental and public service entities got together Tuesday, they covered a lot of ground ranging from economic development plans to the recall effort of members of the Cathlamet Town Council. The representatives get together every three months in forums sponsored by the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Council of Governments (COG). While most speakers had positive news to share, Council Member Sue Cameron reported town government is under a lot of strain. The clerk/treasurer is ill and unable to work, so an interim...
To The Eagle: As librarian I must regretfully announce that it has become necessary to increase fees for out-of-town library cards at Cathlamet Public Library. Half of our patrons live outside the town limits, but the county has declined to add support for the library to their budget for 2018 or 2019. The Library Board of Trustees voted at their January 3rd meeting to raise the cost of an out-of-town children's card to $6, an adult card to $15, and a family card to $23. These fees are still below what other libraries of similar size but with...

Editor's note: The ending of a story about Wahkiakum School District kitchen facilities was inadvertently omitted in last week's edition. The first part of the story described the facility's limited storage space. The rest of the story, published below, describes the facility's impact on the school district's meals program. The complete story was published on The Eagle's website, waheagle.com. By Diana Zimmerman What does a lack of storage space mean? More frequent deliveries at greater cost to the district. “We get three to four deliveries a...

WET/COLD--We ended one year and began another with a couple of things in common: they were both freezing cold and they both delivered outstanding sunrises and sunsets, and I mean just extrodinarily gorgeous ones! I was happy to see the 20 degree temperatures go away, but I was wishing that the warmer temperatures didn't come with quite so much rain, but that's the way it goes around here. Of course, as we started this work week, we began with some heavy sleet in some areas, which caused school to open a little late, and caused some very dicey...

Logging and rain As an inquisitive person, I have often wondered and I have been asked, what happens to all the water that is stored in the trees after they have been cut down, especially here in Wahkiakum County. The obvious is evaporation and then precipitation; then, after several years of hearing the local stories from loggers and others who have lived in the county for decades, I started digging deeper into the reasons why we have so much rain and flooding. Locals have suggested that many areas of the county have been logged as many as...
