  • Wrestlers win in the East

    Jan 10, 2013

Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey Traveling two weeks in a row to compete on the east side trains the mind in many ways. First, off it trains the wrestlers to handle the overnight road trips before the regional and state tournaments. Even more, it revealed to the Mules that they can wrestle with any competition in the state. Nine of the Mule wrestlers traveled to the Almira/Coulee City/Hartline (ACH) Banks Brawl last weekend. Five ended the night in the finals. The Mules' lightweight for the day, Luke Stacey at 126 lbs., was the first in the...

  • Mules go 6-0 over Christmas break

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 10, 2013

Following back-to-back losses to Morton-White Pass and Onalaska in mid-December, the Mules have won six straight games and closed out the first half of the season on a strong note. The recent surge began just before Christmas when the Mules went onto the road and handily beat a less-than-stellar South Bend team 73-24. Lars Blix and Shane Souvenir sparked the Mules offense with 19 and 18 points, respectively, with Seth Doumit and Eli McElroy each tacking on 11 points. Steven Doumit added five points, Travis Wegdahl four, Brandon Budd three and D...

  • Lady Mules dump Vikes, lose to Ducks

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 10, 2013

The Lady Mules were ready to rumble Friday night in Cathlamet. With a solid team effort, they sent Mossyrock home with a loss in what was a very physical game. The Vikings had a slim lead at the half, but the Mules came out of the locker room at the break focused and ready to win. They outscored Mossyrock 25-14 in the final 16 minutes, ultimately winning the game 43-33. “I thought the girls did a good job,” said Coach Rob Garrett. “In the first half, Mossyrock played a better game. Our girls...

WET SNOW?--The big question on everyone's mind is whether or not it is going to snow today (Thursday) as forecasters were saying earlier in the week that we could see more white conditions around the area. I know skiers and folks who love to play in the snow with their 4-wheelers are all excited about it, but as for me, I'll pass! If it does happen to show up, please take extra care and caution when driving around in it, as you may know what you're doing, but that other guy might not! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...

  • PUD evaluating cost of Westend meetings

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 10, 2013

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners met January 2 for their first meeting of 2013. The commissioners approved payment of a $14,000 voucher to the Department of Revenue (DOR) for back taxes. A DOR audit in fall 2012 determined that the utility owed the state $56,000 in underpaid combined excise taxes. Most of the underpayment came from a difference between two formulas used to calculate the PUD’s eligibility for discounts on the amount of tax due, PUD Auditor Erin Wilson had explained to the commissioners at a November meeting. PUD Attorney Tim H...

    Jan 10, 2013

With two of the state’s largest health insurers sitting on surpluses totaling $2.2 billion, Washington’s top insurance regulator wants to use some of that money to lower costs for consumers. According to the companies’ most recent financial statements, Regence BlueShield’s surplus has grown to $1.05 billion. Premera Blue Cross’ surplus is $1.15 billion. “These are non-profit companies,” said Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler in a press release. “It’s hard to square their billion-dollar surpluses with the fact that families are struggling to...

  • County wants more for setback dike

    Eagle Staff|Jan 10, 2013

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday declined to endorse a plan to address the eroding Steamboat Slough Dike on the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer. The Columbia is cutting into the bank and undermining the asphalt of the county road on top. Geotechnical engineers have warned that a large piece of earth could slide away at any time, carrying the dike and road with it and flooding the refuge. The dike isn't part of the US Army Corps of Engineers' dike maintenance program, and neither the...

  • Bird count tallies a record 122 species

    Jan 10, 2013

This male Anna's Hummingbird was found in John & Nova Lee Knopp's yard in Cathlamet. Unlike the common Rufous Hummingbirds that arrive in February and March and fly south by September, this nonmigratory hummingbird species recently expanded its range into Wahkiakum County, helped by hummingbird feeders such as the Knopps provide. Although a few had been seen earlier, Anna's Hummingbirds first appeared on the Wahkiakum Christmas Bird Count in 2007. A new high count for the circle was set this year with nine found. • Big stories come from small creatures

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 10, 2013

Above: Bob Pyle and his wife, Thea, watch the world from their Grays River home. Bob Pyle has recently published his 17th book, "The Tangled Bank." Photo by Rick Nelson. ----------- The photo of author Robert Michael Pyle that appears on the back cover of his latest book, “The Tangled Bank, Writings from Orion,” shows him wearing a thick coat of moss. But if moss doesn’t grow on moving objects, it didn’t grow on Pyle, for he has covered a lot of ground in 40 years as a naturalist. Including two educational coloring books for children, “The Ta...

  • You want Congress to be reasonable about this?

    Jan 10, 2013

To The Eagle: The Eagle's last editorial gasp for last year was devoted to dressing down conservatives in Congress for fouling up President Obama's grand plan to tax the rich, which inspires the same response that Ronald Reagan made famous in his 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter: "There you go again...bashing us poor battered and bruised conservatives." Last time it was the "conservative wing" that was not flapping hard enough; this time we're relegated to "conservative fringe," out there with the loonies, anarchists, and the flat earth folks....

  • Volunteers thankful

On behalf of the members of Fire District #4, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the community for supporting our bond levy request to purchase a newer-used fire engine. The members of this community have always been supportive of our volunteer emergency ser- vices personnel. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support! As a friendly reminder, we would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms. This should be done at least once a year to keep your smoke alarms...

  • An invitation to live beyond one's means?

    Jan 10, 2013

To The Eagle: Back in the old days, when dirt was still hot and dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was a kid, if you did not have the money to buy something you wanted you either went without or you got busy and earned the money needed. Or you traded your time or services or something of value you owned for the item you wanted. That was referred to as "living within your means." Somewhere along the line someone came up with the idea of "lending" money. This was promoted as a way to get what you want now and pay later. "Just make one ‘small easy p...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Jan 10, 2013

We have in our approved Wahkiakum County Fair budget for 2013, $13,500 to pay out to adult and youth exhibitors. Adults will be receiving the same dollar per point as youth exhibitors again. The premium point payment has been reinstated in our budget for Adults, spread the word! With the above good news circulating around our community, a question was asked; “How about purchasing ribbons for the adult exhibitors instead of using stickers?” To buy these ribbons we will need to ask for donations from our community, as we didn’t plan the extra...
