  • Movie night at Grange hall Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 7, 2010

WET AND COLD--Here we are, already a week into the new year. How is it treating you so far? I hope everything is going fine for you but if you’re like me, you’re already wishing for warmer weather as it’s sure been nippy lately. When it wasn’t freezing, it was still wet and windy and the chill just seems to soak into your bones. Brr! Nothing seems to take that away except a nice hot soak in the tub; of course, that’s my old bones talking so many of you aren’t there quite yet. Lucky you! NICE TIME--The New Year came in without any fuss at all...

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: December 28--10:49 p.m. An Ostervold Road resident reported hearing a car alarm outside his house, and when he went to check, he heard voices, possibly from prowlers. December 29--7:52 a.m. The ferry Wahkiakum reported having to shut down because of unscheduled maintenance. 3:43 p.m. A Middle Valley resident reported two dogs belonging to someone else had wandered in and attacked the caller's cat. 8:03 p.m....

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Sarah Lawrence, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 7, 2010

Following last week’s article in The Eagle discussing the proposed funding cuts for the fair I thought it would be best to clarify a couple key issues. Since taking on the role of fair manager I have strived to utilize the fairgrounds, hoping to create a secure financial future. When I first met with the commissioners in October of 2008 to discuss the next year’s budget, I had every intention of pushing forward with my plan for the fair to become self-reliant. After the December snow storm and the collapse of the commercial building, it bec...

  • TV repairman one of a dying breed

    Stevan Morgain|Jan 7, 2010

If there is one thing that makes Wahkiakum County stand out - it's the people. Nowhere else would you find a television repair man willing to drive into the hills of Wahkiakum to find a little hermit living in a blue-tarped shack with a radio controlled plane for sale. He buys the plane, drives home and on his way into the garage, tosses it into the garbage because it was rotten. "He needed the money," said television repairman Paul Dufek of Puget Island. That attitude of kindness is often your...

  • Turkeys are not the only Christmas birds

    Stevan Morgain|Jan 7, 2010

Christmas is for the birds! That’s the annual message from the Audubon Society. Last week, volunteers from the Willapa Hills chapter of the Audubon Society braved rain, wind and snow to count a total of 115 bird species in parts of Wahkiakum, Clatsop and Cowlitz counties after Christmas. The bird count event isn't new. For over 100 years Audubon Society members and volunteers nationwide have counted birds a few days after Christmas. In the early days, prior to the turn of the century, bird counting had a slightly different meaning. One h...

  • Grange News

    Darlene Ammer|Jan 7, 2010

Grays River Grange #124 had a very busy 2009. The year began with a flood. Thankfully, the Grange survived with minimal water in the entry but the water left with a muddy mess outside in the parking areas. 2009 brought some much needed upgrades to the Grange. Work began with the bathrooms being remodeled. The ceiling tiles have also been removed revealing the original grand high ceilings. The Elochoman Grange closed its doors in January. Members from the Elochoman Grange merged with Grays River Grange. Currently, the State Grange is working...

  • Family movie night this weekend

    Stevan Morgain|Jan 7, 2010

Finally! A theater in Wahkiakum ... well, almost. The Skamokawa Grange will host its first “Family Movie Night” celebration this weekend. The featured movie is an incredibly intimate look into the lives of birds and their “Winged Migration.” The movie event includes two short movies produced by Wahkiakum middle and high school students. The program is sponsored by the WSU Wahkiakum County Extension program (WCE). It is administered by instructor Lisa Frink and overseen by WCE Director Carrie...

  • County OK's radio upgrade

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 7, 2010

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized the start of a major upgrade of the county's emergency radio services and heard reports and comments on issues ranging from floods to medical services. Responding to a mandate from the Federal Communications Commission, the county and others across the country are switching their radio systems from broadband to narrowband width. The switch must be completed by January 1, 2013. In 2008, county fire chiefs commissioned a consultant to study the county's radio system and make recommendations....

  • Wall Street executives "get it" all too well

    Jan 7, 2010

To The Eagle: President Obama was interviewed for a "60 Minutes" segment that aired on December 13, 2009. The President's comment regarding the recent multimillion dollar bank executives bonuses was "Which I think tells me the people on Wall Street still don't get it. They still don't get it." It appears the people on Wall Street "get it" all too well. They know our country is entirely at their mercy or whim as to our dismal financial situation. And they really don't care if we want them to receive huge bonuses or not. Sad to say it is...

  • Living with the river

    Jan 7, 2010

To The Eagle: Seems that a lot of time and articles have been dedicated to river problems and suggested solutions to the same problems with many differing thoughts and "plans." This should be expected since most of the county is part of a river system, second largest in the US. Perhaps the biggest interest is in the huge amounts of money being "handed" out to almost anyone claiming to help our salmon. I was encouraged to once again write to The Eagle after reading the "wonderful" article on how the WDFW is going to once again "solve" a...

  • Thanks for service in thankless jobs

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 7, 2010

As we start the new year, I want to say thanks to recently retired elected officials. People have a tendency to look down their noses at "politicians." I hear that in some parts of the country, newly elected officials routinely fire government employees and appoint their cronies upon being elected. Connection is more important than qualification. Being from the Pacific Northwest, I haven't seen much of that. Overall, I'd say our local politicians have kept one goal in mind above all others, and that's serving the public in their jobs. Sure,...
