The visiting Napavine Tigers handed the Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team a 43-31 loss on Tuesday. The Tigers went on a 13-point spurt in the third quarter to take control of the game. Leading 24-17 at halftime, they outscored the Mules 18-5 in the quarter to lead 42-22 after three quarters. Caitlin Nicolazzi added seven, Shelby Felton six, Brianne Helms four and Brieanna Olsen two. Land grabbed 13...
The last two weeks before Christmas brought the Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team into their toughest competition of the year, Coach Matt Stacey reported this week. Competition included the Mules' own Downriver Challenge and the Oroville Tournament. They've faced competitors from perennial powerhouses such as Pomeroy, Tacoma Baptist and Concrete/Darrington. Blayne Edwards, the Mules' entry in the 103 lb. class, has come through it virtually untouched, Stacey said. He won the class at Downriver, and Ben Miles placed second in the 140 lb. class....
For the first 16 minutes of play, the Wahkiakum Mules looked as though they were going to avenge an early season loss to the Kalama Chinooks last Thursday. However, redemption will have to wait as a rough third quarter with just four points on offense put a damper on plans for an end-of-the-year victory as the Mules came up short in a 54-45 loss. The Mules shot just 25 percent from the field whereas the Chinooks were much more successful, hitting 42 percent of their attempts. Leading the Mules with his first big game of the season was Ryan...
STILL COLD--Wow, we've had some nippy nights in West Valley but we certainly love the clear, sunny days that have often accompanied them. Our first day of the new year was mostly cloudy and I was fearing snow, but thankfully we didn't get any of that. I'd like it to warm up a bit, but as long as we're not suffering any horrific damages to anything, the frosty mornings and blue skies are looking pretty good right now. However, it sounds like we may be in for some changes so let's hope we don't slip and slide on freezing rain or wind up with a...

Roger Lincoln Sonneland passed away at his home in Cathlamet on January 2, 2011. He was 87 years old. Roger was born on February 20, 1923 in St. Helens, Ore., to Blaine Samuel Sonneland and Norma Manning Sonneland. He served in the United States Navy from 1940-1947. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Joan Canham, who was serving in the WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service). They met on Roger’s first night’s liberty in Wales. They were married on April 12, 1944. Roger and Joan spent their early married life in St. Helen...
Marie M. (Markovich) Didricksen, 89, of Cathlamet, passed away, Thursday, December 30, 2010 in Longview. Marie was born August 12, 1921 in Portland, Ore. to Joseph and Frances (Mladinich) Markovich and grew up on the family farm in Aloha, Ore. At age 18 she moved to Cathlamet where she resided until her final days, with the exception of a year working in war defense in Portland during WWII and a half-year in Seward, AK following her marriage to George Didricksen in 1944. For 21 years, Marie owned and operated Marie’s Café in C...

She married Jack Lawson in 1935 and together they moved to Cathlamet; he preceded her in death in 1997. Arlene was a member of Cathlamet Assembly of God Church. She worked at Columbia View Care Center for 25 years as a nurse’s aid. She was devoted to her family. In her later years, Arlene’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the focus of her eve...
The Skamokawa Town Center, whose existence has been up and down since it was extensively remodeled in 1994, has sold. Wahkiakum County records indicate that Don Jester of Rochester bought the property in a cash sale for $575,000 in December. The property had been part of bankruptcy proceedings in 2009. The new owner plans to rehabilitate the buildings, and has hired a professional to survey the area and re-stock the store, said David Nelson of Cathlamet Realty West, who handled the sale. Nelson said Jester planned to have family members live...
Local realtors are looking for the bottom of the housing boom-to-bust cycle that grips the nation. Foreclosures are driving down the price of homes in Wahkiakum County and financing is unpredictable. “Seems like we’re waiting for what we hope is going to be the bottom,” said Stephanie Prestegard of Lower Columbia Realty. Newly elected Wahkiakum County Assessor Bill Coons said the real estate market is still declining. “Foreclosures are putting a lot of pressure on private sales,” he said Monday, his first day as county assessor. “Some peo...
Dennis Reid of Skamokawa attended his first meeting representing District 3 on the Wahkiakum PUD board of commissioners Tuesday. PUD General Manager Dave Tramblie advised the board that Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services Community Outreach Coordinator Mary Vik is pledging funds to help ratepayers avoid shut-offs. Customers need a disconnect notice to access Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds, but the shut-off date may be earlier than an appointment in Longview with Lower Columbia Community Action Council (CAP)...
When photographer Judy VanderMaten of the Broadway Gallery saw Becky Ledtke’s jewelry, she arranged for Ledtke to be featured at the gallery in Longview in January. Ledtke’s gemstone necklaces are substantial and dramatic with origins across the globe. The owner of Heavy Stone Jewelry, Ledtke raised cattle for 25 years in Skamokawa. “I wanted to do something to make staying home more fun, since beef cattle ranchers don’t get vacations too much,” she said. She started by buying beads and stones and she “figured out what people like to wear.” Led...
The Cathlamet Town Council wrapped up its budget preparation for 2011 with a special meeting last week. Three major issues remained to be settled, Mayor George Wehrfritz said at the start of the meeting--library staffing, a contribution, if any, to the successor of the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council, and the budgets for the fire department and emergency services. Council members left their regular monthly meeting December 20 unsettled on how to set funding for library programs. They were considering reducing the salary of...
In a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners agreed Tuesday to contract with the merged Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Lower Columbia Economic Development Council (EDC). The two organizations are merging this year as state funding for EDCs is drying up. Commissioners Lisa Marsyla and Dan Cothren voted to make a $25,000 appropriation; Commissioner Blair Brady voted against it. The funds come from the state and are specifically set to be used by a county's economic development organization, selected by the county commission. Brady suggested t...
To The Eagle: First of all, ask Oliver and Irene Bacon about the history of my folks and me in Cathlamet. Irene took care of me in 1948-49 when my folks taught at Wahkiakum High School. We lived on Puget Island again in 1956-58 when they again taught at the high school. I was in the fourth and fifth grades and had a rowboat on Birnie Slough. Seems like I've written this to you before. Pardon if I have senior moments. Please do all you can to support the Veteran's Administration. They've done well by me. I lived in Cathlamet and volunteered for...
To The Eagle: In reading the December 30 edition of the Wahkiakum County Eagle, I have some more things that we should all consider and look at thinking positive and expressing our own opinion. I totally agree with our county commissioner on the thought that we should form a Park and Recreation District on the Johnson Park site. I've been thinking along the same lines for close to 10 years when the school and the county have been wanting the county to take over the operation of the area. I was a fifth grader when that school opened and it was t...
To The Eagle: Our editor prizes brevity, which perhaps explains why last week's editorial concerning the Chamber of Commerce/EDC merger was spare in its account of the adventures of the Economic Development Council. In an attempt to rescue the faltering golf course a few years ago, the EDC set up a condominium project complete with golf cart garages which, in theory, would disgorge a crowd of wealthy and eager golfers onto the course on a daily basis. The contractor balked until the town agreed to spring for a sewer system, and the town, pleadi...
To The Eagle: As a follow up to a call for citizen help I just wanted to notify the public that your response objecting to the closure of Tunerville camp has been heard and acted on. At a meeting on December 15 that could take the award for probably the most miserable conditions that elected officials have ever attended there came a compromise. Senator Brian Hatfield, Representative Brian Blake, Representative Dean Takko, County Commissioner Jon Kaino, and all three Commissioners from Wahkiakum County stood in the rain in a circle of concerned...

Cold, cold, cold! I hope everyone was prepared for it. The sunshine was a Godsend during the days, though, and allowed us to get most of the roofing done on our house. Once it is complete we can concentrate on inside work. News from Naselle: School’s back in session after the winter holiday break. Sports calendar for Naselle games coming up this week include: Thursday-girls basketball at Willapa Valley at 5:45 p.m.; Friday-boys basketball at North Beach at 5:45 p.m.; Saturday-girls basketball at home with North Beach at 5:45 p.m.; Wednesday-mid...
