  • Mules place 3rd in Clatskanie meet

    Jan 5, 2012

The Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team earned a tie for third place at the Clatskanie Tounament on December 28. "After the major road trip to Oroville, the team was happy to compete right across the river," said Coach Matt Stacey. "Being a local tournament did not mean that the competition was in anyway inferior as Clatskanie was able to bring in such tough competition as Vernonia and Cascade JV. The Mules added to the tournament's tough competition; the team earned 159 points, only 10 points behind the champion Vernonia's 169 points, which is less...

  • Local fills in gas station history

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 5, 2012

FIRST COLUMN OF NEW YEAR--Well, here we go into another year and we have started out this new year very nicely; warmer temps and sunshine even! As we had a nice weekend, it was the perfect time to take down the outside lights while they were dry, and by Monday afternoon, they were definitely soaking wet, if they hadn't blown away. That was some strong squall that popped up in the late afternoon/early evening hours; thankfully it didn't last too long. They say we may have some rain by the end of the week, we may even get another break. The last...

  • Slide threatens Loop Road

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 5, 2012

Wahkiakum County Commissioners handled a variety of business Tuesday in their first meeting of 2012. Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported that a landslide is threatening Loop Road. A portion of the slope between the road and the Grays River slid away on Friday downstream of the Covered Bridge. Ringen said the County Road Department would install barriers to close the road down to one lane while he works on a solution to the problem. "There are many components to consider," he said. The river is eroding the toe of the hill, and the top of...

  • PUD commission reviews infrastructure

    Ruby Murray|Jan 5, 2012

During a short meeting Tuesday, Wahkiakum Public Utility District commissioners reviewed the district’s plan to maintain and replace its infrastructure. Gene Healy accepted his new role as president and began by thanking Commissioner Dennis Reid for his term. Manager Dave Tramblie reviewed a System Improvements Summary that the engineering firm Brown and Kysar had prepared, which outlined a systematic plan in four year blocks from 2009 through 2023. “The utility basically rebuilds its system every 30 to 50 years,” he said. According to the p...

  • Local resources can help keep resolutions

    Ruby Murray|Jan 5, 2012

People who use the beginning of the year to consider lifestyle improvements may benefit from local support. While county residents are not statistically different from state residents on many health measures, there is room for improvement according to a Washington Department of Health (DOH) survey for 2011. One in nine adults in the county has asthma, and one in 12 adults has had a heart attack, coronary heart disease, angina, or stroke. One out of seven adults reported they currently smoked cigarettes. “Secondhand smoke, especially in cars, i...

  • Council awards waste water contract

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 5, 2012

  • Federal money system a swindle

    Jan 5, 2012

To The Eagle: Some discussion of doing away with the Federal Reserve Banking System has been heard lately on the news. This is good news. The bad news is the Federal Reserve Banking System itself. The purpose of the Federal Reserve System is to create reserves for commercial banks. To create these reserves , an officer of a Federal Reserve Bank writes a check, usually to a securities dealer to purchase some type of bond, most often a U.S. Government bond. The Federal Reserve does not have a checking account. They only have a checkbook. What...

  • Conservative branch responds to devastation

    Jan 5, 2012

To The Eagle: We, the local "conservative branch," were pretty devastated by last week's Eagle editorial in which we were taken to task for our "continual negative campaign" against our poor abused president, as well as sacrificing the well-being of all the other citizens. This severe upbraiding seems to also have damaged my memory since I can't seem to recall preventing the prez from submitting a budget, giving away trillions to his labor union and Wall Street cronies, spending billions on green Rube Goldberg projects like Solyndra, biofuels,...

  • Transitions leave big shoes to fill

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 5, 2012

The end of 2011 brought a lot of transitions to the ranks of Wahkiakum County's public employees and volunteers. Three county employees retired after decades of public service--Kathy Durrah, a clerk in the auditor's office, Danny Eaton, a skipper of the ferry Wahkiakum, and Eddie Blaine, a member of the road crew on the Westend. It's time for a break--I hope they enjoy it. Some of the people leaving their jobs leave big shoes to fill, and I hope we'll continue to see them involved in public service. David Goodroe has left the Cathlamet Town...
