As 2012 was coming to a close, we wound up having freezing weather and very thick fog out here in West Valley on Sunday and Monday mornings, so while I enjoyed the sunshine that showed up once the fog lifted, the nippy nighttime temperatures and snow in...

Many of us are familiar with Julia Butler Hansen, Cathlamet businesswoman, state legislator and United States congresswoman, and namesake of the diminutive white house at the corner of Main and Butler in Cathlamet. The more historically inclined among us probably know something about Julia’s mother, Maude Kimball Butler. Thanks to Emily Kintigh, a senior at the University of Denver, Colorado, visitors to the Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center can learn more about the pioneering family from Maude herself. For the past several months, Kintigh h...

Working outside in this cold weather isn’t much fun, yet wintertime projects at the Fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our projects is to fix all the little problems some of our buildings have acquired over the years. The horse barn gutters had come loose, sending rain water cascading down the siding and the resulting pools of water were flowing into some horse stalls. Bill Chamberlain and Ed Stevens worked together to put those gutters back to doing their job! They also noticed that the metal roof, probably because of t...
Lisa Marsyla's last week at work as a Wahkiakum County commissioner was quiet. The board held their final meeting of 2012 on December 26, and it would have been the final meeting for Marsyla as a commissioner, for she didn't seek re-election. However, Marsyla's daughter was ill. Marsyla stayed home to care for the child, and she was able to leave office without a lot of fanfare. That's too bad. She has been a good commissioner and deserves a salute. Marsyla has been a committed official and worked hard on the tasks she tackled. An accountant,...
