Snow, snow and a little more snow. It was beautiful to look at, but treacherous to drive in for many. Lots of trees and big branches down which also caused some distraction for a few. I would like to say a huge thank you to our county crews for all their hard work and for probably losing a bit of sleep in order to keep things running smooth. I know I won’t drive in it if I don’t have to, but many folks have to get to work, and without your crews keeping the roads clear, that would not be possible. Thank you. October has been a wet one, and hopefully it's not a predictor of what the rest of the winter will bring as far as precipitation. My rain gauge here in Grays River reads over 18 inches for the month. Fortunately we were only flooded in one time. It's a really good idea to get prepared for the worst. Make sure you are equipped with supplies for yourself and your family, your pets and even keep an eye on your neighbors--just in case. Fuel for your generators and vehicles is also a must--just in case. Carry an emergency bag in your vehicle with...

Do we live in the “wild and wilder” northwest or what? This past weekend was certainly an eye opener as to Mother Nature’s power and ferocity. I thought I was prepared for just about everything, but it seems that wasn’t the case as far as my beautiful old walnut tree was concerned. I have no idea how old it was, but as I stood in my living room watching the wind and rain, that monstrous tall tree just decided to lay over into the yard below our house. It was surreal, as if in slow motion. It is like losing an old friend. As I finish up this ar...

It is so good to be home to my little piece of heaven, from the central valley of California’s 100 degree heat, traffic, people everywhere, police sirens and insane freeway driving to get anywhere. That said, it was probably the most wonderful and healing trip that I could have ever made. I spent 11 days with kids, grandkids and other family members that I hadn’t seen in years, as well as more of our “adopted kids” and their families. But going there will be only to visit. This is home. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle...
I’m writing this week’s column at the kitchen table of my son and daughter-in-law in “sunny California.” Believe me, if I didn’t have family and friends here, I wouldn’t be either. So many people on top of each other, so much traffic and construction everywhere. That said, I am having a wonderful visit with everyone. It has been a very long time since I visited the place we raised our children. I am making a point of seeing how things have changed and those things that have remained the same since we left nearly 17 years ago. Kind of bittersw...
Hooray for the rain. We really need it as everything has turned brown. Hopefully it will also help with some of the fire danger as well. It’s hard to believe this year is nearly gone. What happened to summer? The leaves are already turning color. I hate to admit it but I’m really looking forward to fall, with cooler temperatures and a fire in the wood burning stove. Maybe I’m weird, but I do love the weather here, even the rain.
