At least we are seeing some real spring like weather the past few days. The temperatures are still colder than normal, I think. The poor cherry trees and apple trees aren’t sure whether they should start to bloom or not. I guess we just have to chalk it up to “global warming.” News from Naselle Naselle-Grays River Valley School sports calendar for the coming week: Thursday-baseball at Naselle vs. Northwest Christian at 3:30 p.m., track at Wahkiakum at 3:30 p.m.; Friday-JV baseball at Wahkiakum at 3:30 p.m.; Monday-fastpitch and baseball in Nase...

Looks like snow and colder weather is on the way. Time to stock up on a few necessary supplies just in case. Remember to check on your animals, make sure their water is thawed and available, and that they have a warm, dry place to bed down. It’s also a good idea to check on your neighbors just in case they need something that you might be able to help them with. We’re all in this weather pattern together, so it can’t do any harm to help each other out. News from Naselle: The first grade class at Naselle School was alive with excitement that...
Daffodils are coming up and they’re beginning to bloom but still the weather doesn’t seem to be pointing to nicer weather in the near future. Spring is definitely on the way even though we’ve had some not so nice days and nights. Maybe, maybe we will see some sunshine this week. Lake Fred (my pasture) is down and the ducks are gone. We can once again drive out our driveway without worrying about water getting into the vehicle. Oh, the joys of winter in Grays River. News from Naselle: Let’s all remember to mark our calendar for the annual Valentine Smorgasbord to be held on February 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Naselle-Grays River School. This event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, and is a one of a kind lunch. You can’t go wrong by attending thi...
Flooded in again! It wasn’t too bad until Sunday and we couldn’t get any of the vehicles out. The ducks are in heaven though. Our dogs have discovered that if they wade into the water under the trees, they can pick the mice out of the lower branches and have a snack. Of course sometimes you have to share with the other dogs. News from Naselle: The Naselle Drama Club will host a Musical Variety Show on Friday at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door to help defray some of the Drama Club costs. Enjoy a fun filled evening of family ent...
Another weird week of weather. It looks like all the gloom and doom forecasts have just about missed us so far. It makes me wonder how much these folks get paid, with all the high tech equipment, and still can’t get it even close to right. Maybe they should have a window put in their offices, and look outside before they give a forecast. Be advised, though, the bad weather warnings need to be heeded, just in case. Living in the country makes it difficult to run out and get what you need at a moments notice. Make sure you keep supplies on h...
Cold, cold, cold! I hope everyone was prepared for it. The sunshine was a Godsend during the days, though, and allowed us to get most of the roofing done on our house. Here we are, the final countdown to the end of 2010, and a new year dawning with hope for good health and good fortune coming with it. It has been an eventful year for many of us, but we have all made it through. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and that it was full of family, friends, good food and lots of fun. We headed south to Stockton, Calif. and apparently got the blame for bringing more rain to them. We had a wonderful time, spent lots of time with grandkids, kids and even some friends. The grandchildren made ornaments for next...
News from Naselle: The two day boys and girls basketball tournament will take place in Ilwaco on Tuesday, the 28th and Wednesday, the 29th. Good luck Naselle teams! Comet Booster Club calendars are available at Okie’s in Naselle, Rosburg Store in Rosburg and the District office at the school. The price is still $4. If you haven’t finished your shopping yet, you might consider, as a last minute gift, purchasing a gift certificate from one of the local businesses. Perhaps a nice meal at one of the restaurants or even a gift certificate for grocer...
Sunday certainly brought an interesting storm to our area. The Grays River was over its banks and in the fields within a few minutes that afternoon. We drove to Rosburg at about 3 p.m. and in the time it took us to get back home the water was about four inches deep over our driveway coming in. Of course, Lake Fred (our pasture during fair weather and duck pond during storms), was already up by then and the creek was more than full. Such an exciting place to live, but you know, I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else. On Monday, our last two w...
Only a little more than two weeks before Santa is to arrive. Hope you have all your shopping done, and that you have done much of it locally. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was wonderful to get away for a few days, see family, eat too much and get some wonderful news as well. We kind of slip-slided our way to Redmond, Ore. for the holiday as the roads were pretty icy, but made it all in one piece. Our oldest granddaughter, Marlee, became engaged on Friday, and shared the news with us after her boyfriend, Scotty, proposed to her while they were hiking on Smith Rock, just outside of Redmond. They haven’t set a date yet but plan to be married in the summer. It looks l...
My goodness, it’s nearly December, and another year almost gone. Christmas is almost here. This was an unusual beginning for our week. Snow, snow and even a little more snow. An early deadline for the week also throws off the norm. It is really an interesting camp out trying to keep the water pipes from freezing in our motor home. We are actually getting some things done on the home building front though. The framing is nearly done and the roof is covered both upstairs and down with plywood and plastic which means the interior is mostly dry, s...
News from Naselle: The Naselle Grays River Valley School District held a special Veteran’s Day Celebration to honor our veterans on November 10. Several local veterans were in attendance and were given special recognition. It was a wonderful experience for the students, the community and the honored veterans. We certainly owe them for their service and sacrifice and for our freedom. We also need to remember every day those who are serving now in order to maintain our free nation. Thank you to all the veterans who served past, present and future...
We woke up this morning to four gunshots, not a real surprise as we had hunters on the property. It turned out to be a really successful hunt for Alan Gregory and Mark Zimmerman. They each got their bull elk. Alan’s was a four point plus two eye guard points and Mark’s was a three point plus two eye guards. Congratulations to you both. News from Naselle: PACNET (Pacific County Narcotics Enforcement Task Force) was at school on November 4 for an educational assembly at which time Simon, the PACNET drug dog was introduced. Four deputies, inc...
Five and a quarter inches of rain in the bucket, five inches of water over the driveway, ducks, sea gulls and geese in the lake that is usually a pasture; I think winter is coming. The weatherman says a few days of sun are in store. Maybe we can get some more work done on the house. News from Naselle: Another win for the Naselle Comets with a score of 47-14 against Ocosta. Congratulations Team! Sports coming up this week include: Friday, the 5th- football crossover with Central League; Saturday, the 6th- cross country state meet at Pasco. What...
Rain, rain, and please go away so we can finish the roof over our house. I don’t think Mother Nature is listening. At least we have it covered in heavy plastic waiting to continue when the deluge stops. Sports coming up this week include: Thursday – football at Ocosta at 7 p.m.; Saturday – cross country at Evergreen. Friday is Family Movie Night beginning at 6 p.m. A great way to spend a...
My heart goes out to Lois Nelson and the loss she has endured due to her home fire. Fire is devastating not only to property but emotionally as well. I hope she was able to save some of her most personal items, as that seems to be what we miss most, in this type of a loss. Brr! Nights are getting down there temperature wise, but the clear skies are gorgeous. I don’t remember so many nights in a row where you could see the stars so bright. The days have been pretty though, almost too warm in the afternoons. We certainly appreciate Mother N...
